Two questions: What’s your company’s North Star? ⭐ What keeps your customers awake at night? If your answers to these questions aren’t aligned, your metrics need reconsidering. I speak from experience because our answers didn’t align either. When Shaun and I started Plus One Robotics, I was obsessed with the notion of #RobotsWorkPeopleRule. It’s still a great idea, it frames our ethos, it undergirds how we build our solutions, and we stand by it daily. But it doesn’t define anything concrete to work toward, and it doesn’t express our raison d’etre to our customers in retail, parcel, or grocery. What does resonate with our customers: efficiency. Getting boxes, packages, parcels and packets on trucks/planes/etc. What keeps our customers up at night is getting more volume through their buildings in time to hit the shipping cutoff windows. So a couple of years ago we reframed our top metric to Continuously Increasing Our Customers’ Total Picks Per Day. Not as pithy as our motto and it makes for a lousy hashtag, but it has proven to be a great North Star metric. I know many of you are entering annual planning sessions right now and reconsidering your metrics for next year. I encourage you to: 💫 Refocus on what matters most to *your* customers, whether that’s efficiency, cost-savings or innovation. 💫 Unite every single department in your organization around this one goal. Make sure everyone can work toward your North Star — otherwise, your aspirations may just be star-crossed. (See what I did there.. ;)) 💫 Practice a little story-telling. If your North Star is hitting certain revenue goals, how can you reshape that into a metric benefitting your customers? When you reframe existing metrics, you may identify a new avenue for progress altogether. This one was new to me and I thank Nick Kim for pointing it out. A North Star isn’t just a singular metric, it’s a blueprint for how to interact with your customers and employees every single day. So keep going back to it.
