This year’s Grand Finale was a celebration of maritime innovation, with members from the entire ecosystem joining us last Thursday in De Loft in Rotterdam, overlooking the RDM Innovation Dock. The event was the culmination of an intense 3-month accelerator programme, showcasing the groundbreaking innovations developed by the 10 maritime tech entrepreneurs, who all came back to Rotterdam to present themselves, their innovative ideas, their progress and the collaborations that they were able to start because of the programme. Akros Energy (part of H2APEX), CarbonBlue, CLCircular, Excess Materials Exchange, Fjuel, HalioGen Power, NAUTI, Omni Wind, SeaO2, and SEADAR - it was great getting to know you and we wish all of you the best of luck in scaling your business and rolling out your technology. It’s people like you that we need to address critical challenges in the maritime sector, a.o. sustainability, digital transformation, energy transition and operational efficiency. This is also a good moment to thank our valued partners for their involvement, advice and the projects they’ve set-up with our 2024 Cohort: - Damen - Gemeente Rotterdam - GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz) - MINDbase (Materiel and IT Command) - Port of Rotterdam (lead partner) - Van Oord (lead partner) Of course, we are also thankful for the support of other likeminded stakeholders in the Dutch maritime cluster. Think of our group of voluntary mentors who provide their knowledge, contacts and guidance, and organisations such as InnovationQuarter, Rotterdam Maritime Capital of Europe, Rotterdam Maritime Services Community, NMT | Netherlands Maritime Technology, KVNR | Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners, and Rotterdam Partners. All in all, everyone had a good time, and even at this closing event several opportunities cropped up, meaningful connections were made and potential future collaborations were discussed . The Grand Finale 2024 confirms PortXL's commitment to fostering and accelerating technological advancement in the maritime ecosystem. Hope we can count on you all again for 2025’s programme, for which the first candidates have already knocked on our door! It is no longer a choice or a nice 'extra'; it is a necessity if we want to continue to exist together as a port, and as a port business sector. Exclusively selected start-ups will be accelerated during an intensive mentorship driven program located in the city of Rotterdam. Apart from training, PortXL offers an ecosystem of founders, investors and corporate partners that supports and accelerates the entrepreneurial journey. On the final closure day, the teams will pitch their business ideas to an audience of launching customers, business angels, venture capitalists, multinationals, journalists and sponsors. We don’t just accelerate startups. We innovate ports for sustainable growth

Introducing: Excess Materials Exchange Our 2024 cohort was a tough competition and we’re excited about each and every one of them and how they are going to shape the future of the maritime industry. Today, we’ll talk about the last, and certainly not the least, of our 10 start-ups and scale-ups: Excess Materials Exchange. So, have a look at their technology and contact Christian van Maaren if you have any questions! These days we hear a lot about creating a circular economy, but Excess Materials Exchange is actually making it happen. Through their digital matching platform, Excess Materials Exchange is able to find a new home for high-value materials that otherwise would go to waste. Not only does this help businesses create less waste, it also enables them to improve their bottom line by reselling materials that they would otherwise need to take a loss on when no longer needed. We look forward to seeing the impact that Excess Materials Exchange has on reducing waste and reusing resources. The idea of a world with less waste is a beautiful one! They are ready to make waves in the maritime industry - each of the start-ups and scale-ups of our cohort 2024 are already contributing to revolutionizing the maritime industry. And they are only just getting started! These past few weeks we’ve been introducing them to you. This week, SeaO2. One third of all CO2 emissions end up in the ocean. That is a significant amount of pollution to our waterways. In fact, the concentration of dissolved carbon is 150 times higher than in the air. SeaO2 is a Dutch Ocean Carbon Removal company committed to addressing climate change through removing CO2 from the atmosphere at gigaton-scale. Carbon Removal technologies are Negative Emissions that are crucial to achieve Net Zero. SeaO2's solution, Direct Ocean Capture, relies solely on renewable electricity and seawater to extract CO2 from the surface of seawater and consequently from the atmosphere in a scalable and cost-effective way. The process uses electrochemistry and vacuum to transform the existing dissolved inorganic carbon in water into gaseous CO2, which is extracted and permanently stored in geological formations or utilised into products such as concrete or alternative fuels like green methanol with third-party providers. Therefore, the extracted CO2 isn’t wasted, but instead used as a resource. Imagine that, reducing pollution AND gaining resources at the same time! This cutting-edge technology is derived from research at the University of Delft. Want to know more or use this technology? Then get in touch with Ruben Brands and visit www.seao2.com.

Introducing NAUTI, one of the 10 start-ups and scale-ups in our accelerator programme that are shaping the future of the maritime industry. Sadly, our planet is being plagued by pollution. It affects our health and that of the ecosystems that it supports. Many ‘solutions’ are more like band-aids instead of actually stopping the problem. In order to protect the environment, the world we live in, we need to do more. And NAUTI is actively taking steps to not only detect where pollution is occuring, but addressing it through nature-based solutions. NAUTI focuses on water cleanup through its IOT Box. This box is able to be attached to vessels, making cleaning the water easy and requiring few resources. The box is also able to monitor water quality in real time through data that it collects. Through that data, in-depth reporting and calculations are made on how to clean the water. They use microorganism activity such as zooplankton, fauna and flora enhancement which naturally decomposes pollutants and boosts oxygen. An interesting, scalable solution showing that it is possible to identify biological pollution and mitigate it. We look forward to what new and innovative advances NAUTI implements to help save our planet! Check out www.nauti.one or get in touch with Johannes Trebes Luna or Rawan Khater

The 10 start-ups and scale-ups in our accelerator programme are already making an impact on the maritime industry and we’re excited to see what will happen after they conclude the programme. For now, we’re introducing them to you one by one - they each deserve the spotlight. This week, Omni Wind. When we think of wind power, we often think of giant wind turbines. But what if you could install smaller wind turbines in places where larger ones could never fit? That’s what OMNI Wind is doing with their compact wind turbines that are able to run day and night. A patented duct system surrounds their wind turbines, thereby enhancing the wind velocity at the center and boosting output. These smaller, more compact turbines are used on-site and in combination with other green energy resources. Their design is flexible and can match the energy needs of a great many projects, locations and companies. We expect great things to come from OMNI Wind as they bring wind energy to business and commercial sectors such as Airports and Data Centers globally! Reducing grid congestion Another benefit is that the system supports a diversified and locally focused approach to energy production. Having dedicated wind turbines close to where power is needed reduces grid congestion and can also be deployed as a supplement to solar energy. Want to know more? Please join us in welcoming HalioGen Power to our 2024 cohort. After scouting hundreds of start-ups and scale-ups earlier this year, we chose 10 businesses, together with our partners. This cohort has so many innovative solutions and ideas, it’s hard to know where to begin! One of the biggest challenges that the renewable energy industry has is how to store excess energy to be used at a later date. HalioGen Power makes renewable energy accessible anywhere, anytime and for anyone. How is it doing that? HalioGen recognizes that there is a supply-demand mismatch of renewable energy production versus energy demand. They have developed a first of its kind, affordable, efficient, non-flammable and sustainable energy storage technology by using a membraneless battery, enabling energy to be stored for a longer period of time. Not only is HalioGen making it easier for anyone to access renewable energy, but to do so in a sustainable way. The technology is durable and has a lifespan of over 20 years. It’s also non-flammable and utilizes materials that are abundant and recyclable, thereby reducing the environmental impact. From 10kW to multi-megawatts, these batteries are ideal for commercial and/or industrial use. When fully charged, each battery lasts more than 10 hours, making it the perfect companion to renewable energy sources. We’re excited to see where this technology takes HalioGen Power and the renewables industry! Introducing: CarbonBlue After rigorous selection our 2024 cohort of 10 start-ups/scale-ups emerged. Last week, we started to introduce them to you. Today it’s time for CarbonBlue! Should you want to know more about them and their technology, simply get in touch with Tal Katz or contact them through their website. CarbonBlue grabbed our attention because of its vision of 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻-𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. As innovators in the maritime industry, we know that decarbonization is key to reaching climate goals. We believe that CarbonBlue’s environment-first model will be integral to getting there. So what do they do to help us decarbonize? They have created 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀, including the ocean, without adding, removing or changing the water’s chemical composition in any way. Amazing right? But they go beyond this, because they are also doing it without the costly, energy-consuming electrical components that you would think you’d need for a project of this scale. Instead, they have implemented 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀. We’re excited to have CarbonBlue as a part of our 2024 Cohort and can’t wait to see what they do to help decarbonize the maritime and shipping industries!
