⚡ 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺? As our record-breaking renewables build-out triggers ‘Dunkelflautes’ and geopolitical tensions, we urgently need low-carbon dispatchable solutions. Is 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 the missing piece? Dispatchable assets are crucial to grid reliability, but they are often both highly polluting and expensive. Our ability to resolve this through interconnectors is limited, as droughts often coincide, capacity is constrained and costly to build out, and 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 cannot be taken for granted. Especially in today’s emerging geopolitical reality it already leads to relentless political debates — illustrated by the central role 𝗘𝗨 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 played in the Norwegian cabinet turmoil, end January 2025. 📍 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 Integrating 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗖𝗚𝗧𝘀 provides a low-carbon option for dispatchable power generation. This approach centralizes carbon capture pre-combustion, outsmarting several point-source CCS technologies, to significantly reduce lifecycle emissions of hydrogen as a 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 and as a 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹. To us, at Power2X, this makes blue hydrogen a viable and crucial puzzle-piece in balancing the grid during prolonged periods of low renewable output, and decarbonizing industry at large. 🚀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄. 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 As #refining margins have come down from the historic highs in 2022-23 to the current multi-year lows, European refiners will rightfully be focused on near-term cost and performance improvements. However, refiners should also not lose sight of longer-term challenges and opportunities: fossil fuel demand in Europe will shrink 20-35% by 2035-40, bio- and e-fuel demand will grow 100-150% by 2035-40, and CO2 emission costs are forecasted to increase to ~4 USD/bbl by 2040. To future-proof their business for the longer-term, European refiners need to move beyond marginal energy efficiency improvements and plan for material site transformations.    𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Incentives vary across the EU, depending on REDIII implementation.   o           Optimizing business cases between internal refinery use and 3rd party offtake potential can significantly improve project viability  o           Partnerships with clean molecule developers can reduce upfront capital commitment for the refinery  3️⃣𝗦𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 / 𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: refinery owners can monetize their site by (co-)developing new synthetic molecules production o           Various green molecule hub options are available to redevelop refinery sites into e-fuel and feedstock production sites o           Refineries can leverage existing infrastructure to cost-effectively redevelop their site, e.g., re-using power grid connections, utilities, and fuel infrastructure o           Local demand potential, supporting policy/regulation and available infrastructure are some of the factors for concept selection   Power2X supports clients making decisions to future-proof their refining businesses and can be a (co-)investor in the clean energy / molecule space. The maritime fuels transition starts now. 2025 is a big year for shipping decarbonization: FuelEU Maritime is now in force and the IMO’s MEPC83 meeting in the spring is expected to agree on mid-term measures including a green fuels standard and global carbon pricing. But knowing what to do as a shipping company can be complex. Not all green fuels projects will get built, and shipping competes with many other sectors for HVO, methanol, ammonia, and methane molecules. We help shipping players navigate this complexity. Making future fuel choices is among the most strategic choices facing the industry today.

✈️ Accelerating Aviation’s Path to Net Zero at Energy Intelligence Forum 2024 ✈️ I had the pleasure to join the Transport eFuels panel session at Energy Intelligence Forum 2024 in London, where Chris Malins, Freya Burton, Lauren Craft and I discussed the crucial role of eFuels in decarbonizing of hard-to-abate sectors like aviation. I underscored the importance of ReFuelEU Aviation, a pivotal initiative driving the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels (eSAF). This framework is more than policy—it’s a catalyst for innovation and investment, ensuring the aviation sector’s sustainable future. At Power2X we are currently developing a large-scale eSAF production facility in Rotterdam, that will essentially turn renewable power into drop in jet fuel. We feel that Europe is well positioned to be a global leader in the introduction of eSAF, demonstrating that with bold action and collaboration, we can turn ambition into reality.
