📊 💻 Shaping sustainable cities with ecosystem analysis By leveraging advanced data tools, we provide cities with precise ecological insights. This input can improve urban planning and inform the development of future sustainability projects. 🔎 Here is an example of a remarkable tool we are using, presented in the timelapse below: The Ecosystem Intelligence platform analyses ecosystem services by first mapping land types, such as waterways, forests, and urban zones. It then performs gap analysis to identify areas for improvement. The analysis covers natural benefit production across climate, air quality, water, biodiversity, soil, and social factors. This enables cities to understand where they stand and develop scenarios to optimise these benefits. The platform features a function to visualise the impact of potential projects. Special thanks to Kenna Halsey and Kevin Benck from the EI platform.

♻️ 🍩 How the doughnut is elevating circularity While both are round, it’s not only their shape that the #Doughnut Economy and #Circular Economy share. The Doughnut Model adds a deeper dimension to the circular economy by connecting environmental sustainability with social equity. In Practical Terms, this is how the Doughnut can support your circular strategies: 🔍 Assess and Analyse: position your circular projects within the broader framework of planetary boundaries and social foundations, ensuring they contribute to both environmental sustainability and social wellbeing. 🚨 Prioritise: Focus your circular initiatives on addressing pressing social shortfalls and ecological overshoot 💶 Fund: establish targeted funding mechanisms, such as the Amsterdam Doughnut Deals, to back innovative ideas that advance circular economy projects 💬 Boost Communication: Engage in discussions and visualisations that highlight the interplay between environmental and social impacts, deepening the understanding of how circular solutions can create holistic outcomes.
How to enroll the Doughnut on a local level - fostering circular economy? Our network got inspiring insights about #DoughnutEconomics in an online workshop with URBACT ad-hoc expert Willem van Winden and our lead-expert Eleni Feleki. 🍩 Surely, the Doughnut Model can serve well as a framework to plan and evaluate the progress of the local circular transition. It enables local administrations as well as policy makers to integrate not only the social foundation and the ecological ceiling of growth, but also to bring together local aspirations and global connections. And, catchy as it is, the model makes a good hook for communicating about sustainability and circularity also on local level. URBACT #LetsGoCircular #CircularCities #CircularEconomy #KateRaworth

🔄 🏗 Two-Day Symposium on Circular Construction in the Hague Last week, the Gemeente Den Haag together with the METREX - The Network of European Metropolitan Regions and Areas, in cooperation with CircuLaw, organised a two-day event: "Rules and Space to Speed Up Circular Construction." The symposium brought together leading experts, policymakers, and professionals, to explore innovative legal and spatial strategies for advancing #circularity in the #construction sector: ❇ Menno Rubbens presented his architectural perspective on making circular buildings ready. ❇ Fanauw Hoppe and Eveline Bakker from CircuLaw discussed the latest EU law developments, encouraging cities to be proactive, ahead of regulations. ❇ @Michiel Bosch from Gemeente Leiden elaborated on their local ambitions and policies for circular construction ❇ Bart Bomas shared spatial strategies to accelerate circular construction ❇ Chandar van der Zande from the City of Amsterdam explained how to translate the EU Taxonomy into local circular construction policies. Lively panels discussion followed, with the additional participation of: ❇Arco Timmermans, public affairs expert at Leiden University ❇ Richard Koek, urbanist at Gemeente Den Haag We are glad at REGENALYZE to have been part of this event, with Willem van Winden leading the discussions as moderator!

Sustainability starts with what we already have! 🛠️ ♻ #Repair #Reuse #Circulareconomy
I was inspired yesterday by a keynote of Dr Steven J. Jackson from Cornell University at a conference in #Tartu, Estonia, titled "Sustainability in Practice: DIY #Repair, #Reuse and #Innovation". He is a leading thinker on repair & #circular economy. ♻️ He invited us to take a closer look at erosion, breakdown and decay, rather then focusing on growth and novelty. Infrastructures and equipment break down by default at some point, so lets analyse how that happens; let's marvel how many things stay in place nevertheless; and let's discuss how can we cope. And..we need more hope, not just as mindset but as action in community. 🪒 Unlike in the global south, where practical repair skills still prevail -Jackson showed many examples- , in rich countries we unlearned to repare: we throw things away and buy new; repair is an unprofitable business model. 🛠️ Recently, #repair is making a comeback here however. Some US states and the EU have adopted Right to Repair laws that force the industry to make more reparable products. 📜 More than regulation, corporates hate regulation that is different in every state. Therefore, Jackson expects a turning point for good, with more international collaboration and standardization. Let's hope he is right!
