To address challenges such as climate change, water and raw material scarcity, and energy demands, it's crucial to make Amsterdam's infrastructure—bridges, quay walls, and pavements—circular and emission-free. We’ve been busy working on this as part of the National Growth Fund: Future-proof Living Environment program, in which we are collaborating with a range of partners to assist the City of Amsterdam in maintaining civil infrastructure, much of which needs renovation or replacement in the coming years, in a #sustainable way. 🧠 Over 130 partners are collaborating on 60 initiatives, using a 200 million euro budget. As the program lead and owner of the Living Lab Learning Environment work package, AMS Institute coordinates and drives collaboration, focusing on innovations and scientific validation. 👉🏼 Read more about the overall program here:  https://lnkd.in/eMyhqzMR Here's a glimpse of some of the work we've done so far: 🛠️ We aim to use circular innovations in 10% of replacement and renovation contracts, such as for pavements. These will include circular material use approaches such as cement-less concrete (Geopolymer) or low-temperature asphalt (LEAB), and encouraging a high rate of reuse for materials. Addressing the challenges connected to the modern construction industry is a question that takes more than a dialogue between the authorities and the industry. It is a societal activity of great importance impacting the whole of society. Hence, it is needed to say, that if we want to change something and form a path for the construction industry to become more regenerative and make a promotion and development of a practice that respects planetary boundaries and contribute positively to a better tomorrow, then we need to do something different. We need to change our mindset and our culture. This involves a fundamental and integrated transformation of structures, processes, and practices and must be considered and reflected in holistic policies, regulation and frameworks that reflect real life experience from the users and form a new path for place-based regenerative development and clear the path towards long-term positive impacts on both human well-being and the health of the biosphere. Sweco has secured a framework contract to be part of an alliance that will provide design and engineering services in the development phase of Helsinki’s light rail expansion. This project is part of the city’s EUR 1.2 billion programme to build over 30 kilometres of new tracks and transition into a rail-driven, carbon-neutral “15-minute city” by 2030. As part of an alliance, Sweco is bringing its expertise to several cornerstone projects in the extensive programme, which is financed by the City of Helsinki and being executed by the client, Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd. The latest decision includes supporting the development of the Vihdintie light rail, the Viikki-Malmi light rail and the West Harbour light rail. “Sweco’s experts have collaborated with City Transport and the City of Helsinki for many years on several alliance projects, and we are proud to be involved in the next steps on the city’s journey towards sustainable urban mobility. We will provide all necessary multidisciplinary design services for the alliance and thereby support Helsinki in transforming into a true ‘15-minute city,’ with sustainable and efficient public transport systems,” says Thomas Hietto, Business Area President of Sweco Finland. On this year’s World Cities Day, 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗞𝗼𝗵𝗹, the Group Director for Transportation & Urban Spaces at ILF, talks about the importance of transport systems for sustainable urban development and the role that ILF Consulting Engineers is playing in paving the way for more sustainable urban environments.   𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲? The increasing concentration of populations in urban areas presents both challenges and opportunities for driving impactful change. With this increase comes a heightened demand for efficient transport systems in modern cities. The ability to easily travel into and within cities significantly impacts the quality of life of people working and/or living in urban areas, making the need for these systems more crucial than ever for achieving sustainability goals. The dependence of urban economic growth on well-functioning transport networks also underlines the urgency of addressing this need.   At ILF Consulting Engineers, we are helping to make existing cities more sustainable by creating comprehensive, user-friendly solutions that prioritize public and non-motorized transport. A prime example of our work is the "Stadtbahn Linz", the new light rail system connecting Linz to surrounding areas in Upper Austria, which integrates various modes of transport to optimize connectivity and efficiency.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂? Coming from a scientific rather than technical background, I’ve always been interested in interrelated systems and how to optimize these. Working as a planner for transport infrastructure projects has allowed me to have a meaningful impact in projects that are actually realized. Revisiting back to last month’s highlight — Industry Engagement Day Plus: Safer, Greener, and Better – Making Our City Smarter with Technology. Co-organized by the @HKUST Knowledge Transfer Office, the HKUST GREAT Smart Cities Institute, and the @Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association, this event brought together over 150 participants from industry and government officials to explore innovative solutions responses to urban challenges and enhancing operations within smart city initiatives.  Key highlights:   Dr. Shin Cheul Kim, PhD, RTTP, Prof. Hong K. Lo and Victor Sheung Shing Tai kicked off the symposium and emphasized the importance of innovation to address urban challenges.    Technology Talk:  Shared by @MS Kun Ka Yin April (Head of Energizing Kowloon East Office of the HKSAR Government) and @Mrs Wong Ho Wing Sze Susanne (Principal Assistant Secretary (Works) 1, Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government). Sharing Session: Among 22 projects that participated, 7 were from our Living Lab initiative, showcasing their innovative ideas through exhibition booths and individual sharing sessions.    With the opportunity to showcase their booth and participate in sharing sessions, this event allowed our Living Lab projects to present their cutting-edge solutions, facilitating collaboration with key thinkers and fostering partnerships to drive innovation.
