Over ons

The Radboud University Network on Migrant Inclusion (RUNOMI) is an interfaculty network organization of more than 90 scholars working at Radboud University. The expansion and intensification of collaboration in research, teaching and partnerships with societal actors in the domain of migrant inclusion studies is at the core of the network. It draws on a vibrant assemblage of diverse scientific expertise on migrant inclusion issues: RUNOMI-scholars are affiliated with the Nijmegen School of Management, the faculties of Arts, Law, Social Sciences, Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, Sciences, and the Radboud University Medical Centre. A core team manages the RUNOMI-activities, ranging from designing and implementing education programs, such as Summer School courses, to research societal impact activities, for instance research projects, the RUNOMI annual congress and seminars. Thanks to the lively community of RUNOMI, many activities are initiated bottom-up and are aimed at a variety of stakeholders such as policy-makers, scientists, migrants and professionals.

  • RUNOMI members Samira Azabar and Lieselotte Blommaert recently gave a presentation at the conference “Combatting Anti-Muslim hatred and discrimination in Europe,” organized by the NCDR: Nationaal Coördinator tegen Discriminatie en RacismeRabin S. Baldewsingh, and the Coordinator for Combating Anti-Muslim Hatred of the European Commission, Marion Lalisse, held in The Hague. They were invited to present their research on discrimination against Muslim women in the labor market, published earlier this year, that was commissioned by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, and carried out by a team of Radboud sociologists that also included Nella GeurtsLex Thijssen and Niels Spierings. The study shed light on the nature and extent of discrimination against Muslim women in the labour market using an intersectional lens. It also identified possible additional policy measures, supplementing current anti-discrimination policies, which could help to more effectively combat discrimination against this target group. More info about the study? See here: https://lnkd.in/dQDbDh5N The full research report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dGpWnjha

• Seminar Alert: Strategizing Silence - Digital Non-Use as Agency for Marginalized Communities Join us for a thought-provoking talk by Prof. Arul Chib from Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, which elaborates on digital non-use as agentic strategies of resistance and resilience in the context of socially marginalized populations. This lecture presents empirical evidence on varied global communities facing societal and digital discrimination, ranging from transgender sex work and forced migration. A conceptual framework for digital non-use is offered to provoke discussions on the potential of socio-structural transformation driven by the experiences of those on the margins rather being centrally mandated. A second provocation concerns debates on the effectiveness of invisibility and silence as a catalyst or subversion of agency. Date: Wednesday 4 December 2024 Time: 15:00 - 17:30 Location: Huize Heyendael, Radboud University Don’t miss the chance to engage in this important conversation. • Today in Utrecht, RUNOMI members Colleen Boland, Noemi Mena Montes and Lia Kleuskens organized the inspiring gathering “Inclusive participation and digitalization: opportunities and challenges for migrants and refugees in the Netherlands,” as part of the RUNOMI Working Group Digital inclusion in public services event series. Noemi Mena Montes and Lia Kleuskens presented findings from their project “Bursting Bubbles and Building Bridges: Empowering Refugee Women through Inclusive Education and Participatory Research,” and Colleen Boland presented preliminary EU Horizon GS4S research findings in the presentation, “Public employment services in the Netherlands: best practices for making the most of migrant and refugee skills?”   The most fruitful part of the event included feedback from participants from a range of backgrounds and experience, including academics, civil society organization representatives and refugees and migrants themselves, which will be used in creating policy recommendations for both projects, and supporting, redirecting and redefining ongoing research. The work cafés grouped into topics of digital considerations in education, daily life and employment informed part of this fruitful discussion, which sought practical solutions and concrete examples as to opportunities and challenges.

  • RUNOMI and Risbo, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam Take Over Data from Stichting Het Kenniscentrum Arbeidsmigranten (KCA) On Tuesday, November 12, KCA officially transferred its research data to RUNOMI and Risbo. This marks the launch of the RUNOMI-Risbo Knowledge Program on Labour Migration, ensuring that critical research on labour migration continues sustainably, with valuable data and insights remaining accessible to the scientific community. KCA’s board will stay involved as an informal advisory council. Since 2020, KCA has been dedicated to promoting a fact-based, evidence-driven discourse on labour migration, providing policymakers and society with research-backed insights. As part of this transfer, data from the first seven surveys will be securely stored in the Radboud Data Repository and through RUNOMI donated to the scientific community for research. We are excited about the future of this important work and look forward to continuing to contribute to the field of labour migration research using KCA's data.

  • Interview with RUNOMI member José Muller - Dugic: More Happiness on the Way to Work - Mental Health Challenges for Status Holders In a recent interview with Sprank Magazine, José Muller-Dugic discusses the mental health challenges faced by status holders in the Netherlands, which often remain overlooked. This lack of focus on mental well-being makes it particularly difficult for individuals to successfully enter the labor market. José highlights the innovative Mosaic intervention, an intervention based on positive psychology, developed to improve both mental health and labor market participation among Arabic-speaking status holders. By collaborating with the target group and focusing on their strengths, Mosaic aims to create lasting impact and support integration into the workforce. Discover more about the development, implementation, and impact of this innovative intervention in the full interview. https://lnkd.in/eS4bQhc5

  • New Professional Publication by RUNOMI Member Yiran Yang 🟥 We are excited to share a new publication by RUNOMI member Yiran Yang in Didactief(online). This research, supported by the Nationaal Regieorgaan Onderwijsonderzoek (NRO), highlights the challenges faced by children who change primary schools, particularly those with immigrant backgrounds. Key Findings: Children who experience school transitions tend to perform worse on final exams (citotoets) and receive lower school advice. This particularly affects children with immigrant backgrounds. The research emphasizes the critical role of proper guidance to support these children in overcoming these educational challenges. https://lnkd.in/ejTVJPW8
