🇪🇺 In Europe, #theEnergyPerformanceofBuildingsDirective (#EPBD) is policy that aims to achieve zero-emission and decarbonised buildings by 2050. This includes a milestone target of reducing emissions by 60% in the building sector by 2030 (relative to 2015 levels). The policy, first introduced in 2002, was most recently updated in 2023 and includes measures such as minimum energy performance standards, renovation strategies, solar-ready new buildings, and phase-out of boilers powered by fossil fuels. Why focus on the #EUregulations? Compared to other continents, the EU is setting the trends and leading by example on this topic. Eventually others will follow in their footsteps. Currently most of the focus is on energy and energy efficiency. This is good but it is not the whole picture. It’s the easiest and most obvious place to focus - the “low hanging fruit”. But there are a lot of other factors that contribute to a building’s value - economic, social and environmental - and thus to its return on investment. We need to start looking at value beyond just energy efficiency. Nobody seems to know what exactly the ROI is. Vague answers are often given: “Smart features are too expensive” or “the payback period is too long”. Can we actually quantify it though? YES. Yes, we can quantify the return on investment. There is a lot of information in the literature and in the minds of industry experts. And we at SBC are doing research on this topic, measuring impacts in real buildings. Now we’re trying to pull it all together. 💡 How are we doing? 2025 is knocking at the door and the clock is ticking 🪫 The Paris Agreement calls for participating countries to pursue efforts to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels (UNFCCC 2015). In addition, as part of the European Green Deal, policies have been adopted to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 (compared to levels in 1990), i.e., the Fit for 55 strategy. Many governments have created policy or programs to reach the targets for climate mitigation. Many of these policies are related to energy and energy efficiency and buildings and the built environment are often a core part of such policy because: 64% of buildings in the EU have a poor energy performance 40 % of energy use in the EU is used in buildings 80% of energy used in homes in the EU is for heating, cooling and hot water systems 30%+ of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in the EU are from buildings (source: EEA Greenhouse Gas Inventory, 2023) Therefore, huge investments are required in building sustainability projects to address climate change.
