SMIT Salvage provides emergency response, salvage, wreck removal and environmental care services across the globe, 24/7.

Over ons

SMIT Salvage offers marine emergency response coverage at a moment’s notice, 24/7. We carry out emergency response, wreck removal operations and environmental care services across the globe, no matter how remote the location is. The company maintains specialized equipment and expert personnel in a state of round-the-clock readiness to respond to incidents. Our rapid response is possible because of four strategic locations, which are situated along the main international shipping routes in different time zones (Rotterdam, Cape Town, Singapore and Houston,). The increasingly complex nature of salvage operations requires multidisciplinary, experienced teams. We deploy our own expert salvage personnel but we can also draw on the vast resources of our parent company Royal Boskalis Westminster. We have specialists readily available in several disciplines, which are vital when dealing with an emergency. We have experts in: * Fire-fighting * Hazardous cargoes * (Ocean) Towage * Marine pollution prevention * Naval architecture * Heavy lift engineering * Diving operations SMIT’s salvage teams have experience in confronting the most challenging cases; from chemical tankers, which have suffered damage to their cargo tanks, to fires involving hazardous cargoes on board Ultra Large Container Vessels. MME Our four-day Managing Marine Emergencies (MME) Course provides a unique chance to meet the salvage experts – the people that have really been at the sharp end in averting maritime disasters. It is designed to identify and assess those vital 'first response' actions needed to safeguard crew, ship, cargo, the environment and the reputation of your company in a marine emergency situation. Special attention is devoted to the fundamentals of crisis management and teamwork, including contracting, insurance, legal matters, dealing with the media, fast decision-making, setting priorities and liaising efficiently between the parties involved.

  • 𝑵𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒈𝒍𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒍 𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 At SMIT Salvage, our commitment to excellence in the maritime industry is reinforced through active participation in global events and ongoing dialogue with our network of clients and partners. Recently, we've had the privilege of engaging in several prestigious maritime events: ☑ #ITS2024 of the International Tug & Salvage Community in Dubai, UAE: Our Managing Director, Richard Janssen, shared insights on recent high level salvage projects during a panel discussion, exploring the future of marine salvage and emergency response. ☑ #maritimedayåland in Mariehamn, Finland: We joined the Nordic shipping community in discussing innovative strategies for a sustainable maritime future. ☑ #Posidonia2024 in Athens, Greece: The well-known platform for the global maritime industry. During a span of almost two weeks, several SMIT colleagues - including of course the team of our SMIT Athens office - attended the exhibition, seminars and many social gatherings. As the organization puts it very well: ‘Togetherness is crucial’! ☑ Marine Insurance Conferences in London, Singapore and Athens: Our Manager Projects, Robert Meijer, attended a panel discussion during the London edition #MIL2024 in which the risk management and insurance solutions of last year’s environmental salvage project FSO Safer in the Red Sea were discussed. Engaging with our network is not just about maintaining connections; it's about fostering efficient cooperation with our extensive response and partner network, especially in preparedness for critical emergency response scenarios. We believe that open dialogues and shared experiences with our clients and partners enhance our ability to respond swiftly and effectively when it matters most. Moreover, our discussions continually emphasize the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in relation to our ever-increasing complex projects around the world. As a leading player in marine salvage, we recognize our role in promoting sustainable practices and ensuring that our operations contribute positively to the environment and communities we serve. Together, let's navigate towards a resilient and sustainable future! #MaritimeIndustry #EmergencyResponse #Sustainability #SMITSalvage #ESG #Networking #MaritimeSafety #MarineInsurance #MarineSalvage

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗼? Every company has its own highlights. A unique project, the naming of a new vessel or 'just' a special moment to dwell on. One of our 2023 highlights began exactly one year ago today. On 31 May 2023, after a long mobilization in the Netherlands and Djibouti, our colleagues of Boskalis subsidiary SMIT Salvage set foot on the FSO Safer: a decaying 47-year-old, single-hulled oil tanker with 180 million liters of oil on board, moored off Yemen’s Red Sea coast.   Those who followed the media in the weeks and months that followed know the outcome. After an intensive salvage operation coordinated by the United Nations, our SMIT Salvage colleagues managed to transfer the oil from the FSO Safer to a replacement tanker, averting a huge environmental disaster.   In the video, we look back on this special project.   #boskalis #creatingnewhorizons #smitsalvage #fsosafer #oiltransfer #avertenvironmentaldisaster

  • SMIT Salvage congratulates all delegates of its 59th Managing Marine Emergencies course! Delegates from thirteen different countries came together to delve into topics ranging from high profile salvage cases and its contracts to crisis management techniques. But this wasn't your typical lecture series; more than half of the program was devoted to interactive exercises making use of virtual reality and real journalists, where adrenaline levels and heart rates soared as participants honed their skills.   Among the highlights were a visit to SMIT’s emergency response center, a captivating river and harbour cruise around Rotterdam, and a dinner at the prestigious Koninklijke Roei- en Zeilvereeniging De Maas. The course could not have been possible without our outstanding presenters and contributors, a good mix of both internal and industry, including Rijkswaterstaat, Marinsal Consultants, HFW, BlueOrangeWave Marketing, and Navigate Response, along with the unsung heroes working diligently behind the scenes, making it run like clockwork.   A special acknowledgment goes to Mr Lars Lange, Secretary General of International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI), our esteemed guest of honour, who delivered the final presentation of the day and presented certificates to all delegates. For those eager to learn more about our course and want to register interest for upcoming sessions in April and November 2025 (please note, November 2024 is fully booked), please visit: https://lnkd.in/eh8r5gGm. 𝗕𝗼𝘀𝗸𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗦𝗢 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼𝘀 It will not have escaped anyone's attention that our SMIT Salvage colleagues carried out an extraordinary project in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen in 2023. There, they successfully transferring 180 million liters of crude oil from the decaying FSO Safer to a replacement tanker, preventing an environmental disaster of unprecedented proportions.   Because of the expected global attention to this challenging salvage operation - which was commissioned by the United Nations - Boskalis decided to capture the project on video and photo from start to finish. And with success, as the video reports and photos released at various stages of the salvage operation were widely used by the international media.   The high quality of the videos and the enormous attention this generated were reason for the jury of the Communicate magazine Lens Awards 2024 to reward Boskalis' efforts with an award in no fewer than four categories. This international award is presented to companies and organisations that use film and video as part of their communication activities. The following awards were received: - Best Use of video to Assist Reputation Management (Gold Award) - Best Use of Video on Social Media (Silver Award) - Best Use of Video as Part of an Integrated Campaign (Bronze Award Award) - Best Use of Video from the Energy, Utilities and Extractives Sector (Silver Award)   We thank Coen de Jong and Steven Munzebrock for their outstanding work in capturing this project on photo and video as well as our SMIT Salvage colleagues for the successful execution of the oil transfer under challenging conditions. Watch the stunning video about this project below. #Boskalis #SmitSalvage #CreatingNewHorizons #CommunicateLens #awards #FSOSafer #oiltransfer
