🦩One year of @thegenderedcty book!! Happy #December!! #TheGenderedCity Month! The city #captivates you, drawing you into its rhythms and flows, but then it #suffocates you with #inequalities, where streets and alleys are imbued with gendered power dynamics, where gender norms are inscribed into the very fabric of the city - in the way buildings are designed, in the way streets are named, in the way people move through space. Could I ever truly belong in this city? Or would I forever be a stranger? These were the questions that haunted me as I navigated a world that seemed determined to keep me out. I felt the weight of the spatial limitations in the city. Each time I stepped out of my house, anxiety gripped me, making me hyper-vigilant about my surroundings. I found myself inexplicably skilled at identifying potential harassers from miles away, always on high alert against the looming specters of harassment and assault. Aspects of the #physicalenvironment such as limited street lighting, lack of community surveillance or “#eyesonthestreet”, and unmanaged public spaces can provide opportunities for #crime to thrive. The built environment significantly impacts gender-based vulnerability to violence and crime. Features such as the visibility of entrance and exit points, levels of vibrancy, and overall design can influence whether a space feels safe and inclusive or isolating and unsafe for certain social groups. In The Gendered City we examine the factors that contribute to feelings of insecurity for women and girls. We help outline #strategies to address these challenges, aiming to reduce gendered risks, enhance safety, and promote equitable, inclusive spaces for all. These Interventions are either #SpatialInterventions: The built environment plays a pivotal role in influencing behavior and fostering perceptions of safety. Spatial interventions focus on redesigning urban spaces to deter criminal activity and promote community interaction. This can include: 1-Improved lighting in public areas. 2-Designing parks and public spaces that encourage visibility and social activity. 3-Eliminating physical barriers that isolate communities or create unsafe zones. 4-Implementing principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). #SocialInterventions: Violence prevention is not just about physical changes but also fostering social cohesion and trust. This involves: 1-Engaging community members in the design and implementation of safety initiatives. 2-Creating programs that address systemic inequities, such as women and girls mentorship or employment training. 3-Promoting gender-sensitive policies to address vulnerabilities, especially for marginalized groups. #SexistCities & #NotAllMen How have we reached a point where phrases like “text me when you get home” and exhaustive mental checklists for safety have become a routine part of life for #women? Why do we accept this as normal—the constant vigilance, the careful planning for something as simple as walking alone? I was struck by how every woman I know shares this experience in some way. Yet, knowing that the majority of perpetrators of these crimes are men, I couldn’t help but wonder: how are my male friends engaging with the broader conversation about street safety happening online? Unsurprisingly, most of them didn’t—exceptions aside. What creates this pervasive sense of danger for women? Why is the burden of being “always cautious” placed on them instead of addressing the root causes of this fear? While it’s true that not all men are perpetrators, we cannot ignore the fact that the overwhelming majority of those committing acts of harassment and violence are men. Yet, when these conversations arise, it’s striking how few #men actively participate in addressing the issue. Most remain #silent—perhaps out of discomfort, defensiveness, or simply not feeling it’s their responsibility. And when some do speak up, it’s often through hashtags like #notallmen, which serve more to derail the dialogue than to contribute meaningfully to it. This silence, this lack of active engagement, is part of the problem. By staying on the sidelines, men perpetuate the #burden placed on women to not only endure unsafe conditions but also to figure out the solutions alone. Men, as allies, friends, and members of society, have an essential role to play in dismantling the structures that perpetuate this inequality. It’s not enough to say, “I’m not part of the problem.” Men must be part of the solution. That means speaking up when they witness harassment, challenging the attitudes and behaviors of their peers, and #activelyparticipating in efforts to create safer public spaces. It means acknowledging privilege, listening to women’s experiences without #defensiveness, and committing to #action. https://lnkd.in/dE5bnejb

Featuring #UrbanVoices from our network. Chiara focused on "The #HousingEquation" one of our themes in #UrbanVoices. "With lower incomes, limited financial resources, and outdated norms around ownership, women face steep barriers to homeownership—fueling lasting inequalities in wealth and stability. And I’m here wondering: How will we finally close this gap?" Chiara M., Social Impact Consultant and Doctoral Researcher. Examining the forces shaping housing affordability, Chiara uncovers how economic and #socialdynamics impact access to #housing, spotlighting #disparities across diverse communities. Other themes you can add your ideas and work to are: Gender and Public Spaces (#SexistCities) Exploring how urban design and policies impact women, non-binary people, and other marginalized genders in public spaces, addressing safety, accessibility, and inclusivity. #WomenAfterDark (WAD) Different Experiences in the Urban Night. Climate Resilience and Equity: Investigating the intersection of urban planning and climate action, focusing on how cities can build resilient infrastructure that supports vulnerable communities. The #HousingEquation: Examining urban housing crises, affordability issues, and the need for equitable housing solutions in cities worldwide. Sustainable Mobility and Accessibility (#AccessibleCities): Looking at transport and #mobility in urban areas, including accessibility for differently-abled individuals and the role of sustainable transit options. Breaking the Norms (#SinCity): Challenging traditional norms in urban spaces, from nightlife and subcultures to spaces that push boundaries and embrace freedom of expression, exploring how cities can embrace diversity in lifestyle and resist conformist pressures.
