Last year, the Student Living Monitor offered a €500 raffle prize to one lucky student respondent. The winner was Niels Van den Daele, a student from Belgium! Upon receiving the news, Niels shared his excitement: “When I heard that I won the EUR 500 prize from the SLM research, I couldn’t believe it at first. I mean, what is the chance of winning a prize among so many respondents? I re-read the email three times. I’m really happy with the prize and the fact that I could contribute to this research.” The Student Living Monitor seeks to provide a research basis for understanding the factors affecting student happiness, especially with regards to one's living environment. As a student of urban planning in Brussels, Niels recognises the importance of this research and its impact: “As a student of urban planning in Belgium, and more specifically in Brussels, I believe the SLM research is very important and relevant. Brussels is characterized by a significant shortage of student housing and high rental prices compared to other Belgian student cities. Research on student wellbeing and factors that improve it seems crucial, and I can only encourage it. This research can provide policymakers, spatial planners, and others with a better understanding of the needs of student tenants.
