  • 📣 Better Cocoa for the Planet! 🌴 🦋 Cocoa production has been linked to high rates of deforestation and biodiversity loss, making it a significant contributor to environmental degradation. Addressing and mitigating these negative impacts is essential for achieving a more sustainable cocoa supply chain. 🌍 ECOM, one of the world’s largest cocoa traders and processors that sources from over 30 countries, has made it a priority to reduce the negative impacts from their operations. #transparency #traceability #sustainability #cacao #deforestation

Here is the case study of ECOM Agroindustrial Corp. Ltd. using the #WestAfrica #Cocoa dataset (https://lnkd.in/gauAN4Zm, an aggregate of cocoa plot mapped by 19 companies) together with the Cocoa DRA tool (#Deforestation #Risk #Assessment, https://lnkd.in/giazR2ss). Both data products were developed pre-competitively by the World Resources Institute and World Cocoa Foundation. Technical note: https://lnkd.in/gtm3G-wA 🌳🍫

  • 🥁 Great inspiration form The Netherlands! 📌 The Dutch NGO Urgenda shows in their recent report 'Landinzicht' that if we eat healthier (less processed products, more vegetables and fruit and with 1/3 animal proteins and 2/3 vegetable proteins), we can grow all the necessary nutrients for us and for the animals from Dutch soil. 🍎 🥦 📌 At the same time, we can achieve social goals in the areas of water, nature and climate. There is enough space to release an additional 200,000 hectares of peat meadow area for nature or wet cultivation and to build around 80,000 houses per year from bio-based materials (straw, hemp, miscanthus). 💧 🦋 #transparency #traceability #sustainability #precisonfarming #plantproteins

Huh?

  • 📣 Exciting new publication! 🦐 Establishing a dose that represents a Threshold of Allergological Concern below which a protein is unlikely to cause sensitisation in consumers, could make de novo allergenicity assessment of NFs more feasible. 🫘 This approach might exempt certain proteins from testing, instead focusing on proteins of possible allergenic relevance. #transparency #traceability #allergens #riskassessment #health

Is there a threshold of concern for allergenicity of food proteins? The question whether there is Threshold of Allergological Concern below which a protein is unlikely to cause sensitization or allergy in consumers has been raised often. We were interested in finding out whether and to what extend anticipated protein intake levels played a role in EFSA decisions regarding allergenicity of Novel Foods and conducted a study on this. Interestingly, while protein intake levels were rarely mentioned in the allergenicity conclusions of approvals, new Novel Foods with supposed allergenicity risks typically had anticipated protein intakes exceeding 1 mg/day. Most new Novel Foods with supposed low or unlikely allergenicity had anticipated protein intakes below 1 mg/day. When exceeding 1 mg/day, low or unlikely allergenicity risk conclusions were based on factors other than protein intake. A 1 mg/day threshold was to our knowledge by no means a deliberately used cut-off by EFSA and such a criterion for low or negligible allergenicity seems still arbitrary based on current knowledge. Nevertheless, we posit that the observations from this study support the idea of exploring the existence of a Threshold of Allergological Concern. Interested in this work? • 📣 Exciting new study! 🚦 The results reveal that youths' purchasing behavior is mostly determined by price, followed by product type and environmental sustainability as measured by the FOP eco-label. 🌍 The authors identified five classes (groups) of youth consumers where some exhibited preference for health and nutrition attributes, environmental sustainability, or price. #transparency #traceability #sustainability #FOPL #health

💡New publication alert The last piece of my PhD thesis is finally out! In this study, we assessed children’s and adolescents’ purchasing behavior by conducting an online discrete choice experiment (DCE) in Santiago, Chile. We assessed four different food attributes: price, front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition warning label, FOP eco-label, and type of product (i.e., yogurt, cookie, apple). We found that purchasing behavior is mostly determined by price, followed by product type and environmental sustainability as measured by the FOP eco-label; responsiveness to price was not moderated by whether the youth received pocket money from a family member regularly. Our findings provide a better understanding of youth as diverse and autonomous consumers in an evolving policy environment. You are what you... drink? 🤔 I touched on 'health impact scores' in my last post about our fundraise and received so many questions - so here are the answers. Yuka is a very useful app that anyone can use to scan the barcodes of food products, drinks, and cosmetics to understand how healthy they are and to help find better alternatives. The app is completely independent and you cannot pay to achieve a better score! 📈 We put together a snapshot of the health scores for the soft drinks market to educate consumers and demonstrate why we do what we do at COMMON® | Functional Drinks. The Yuka product rating is based on three criteria: 💊 60% - Nutritional Quality (i.e. sugar, fats, calories, etc.) 🛑 30% - Additives Present 🌿 10% - Organic Bonus 🏆 The only drinks scoring higher than us are health shots (mainly due to their small volume) and waters / infusions. 🫣 Any drinks brands upset with me publishing your scores or if I've missed you out - please don't come at me! 🙏 And yes, I do love a blood orange San Pellegrino in the sunshine 🏖️ #actuallyhealthyfunctionaldrinks
