🎉 The first UT MSc Robotics graduate 🎓! Congratulations Tjeerd Bakker! 📄To read more about Tjeerd's results, check https://lnkd.in/e_j6su4G ➡️ More about the MSc Robotics - https://lnkd.in/e4qsP8GE #robotics #utwente
𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐔𝐓 𝐌𝐒𝐜 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 Our first UT MSc Robotics graduate, Tjeerd Bakker, receiving his diploma from dr Tom Vaneker, chairperson of the Assessment Committee further consisting of prof Ian Gibson, dr Ali Sadeghi, and Thijs Tromper, MSc (Bond 3D). Tjeerd developed a specific path-planning method for 3D printing, directing the printing head enabling voidless filling of complex shapes. Jan Broenink, programme director of MSc Robotics presented Tjeerd a gift, ‘cutie’, more or less the mascotte of our MSc Robotics Programme. For centuries, bird flight has enchanted humanity, from da Vinci's visions to today's engineering challenges. Stefano Stramigioli at the Robotics Centre University of Twente is investigating robotic bird technology to better understand avian wing movements—specifically their flapping flight. As an expert in Port-Hamiltonian system theory, Stramigioli uses a modular approach to model complex systems like fluid dynamics and wing elasticity—similar to assembling LEGO blocks. This ambitious method led to a breakthrough: the numerical simulations taught the team about the physics, reversing the usual process. This research has potential for significant societal impact. Improved windmill designs and high-tech stents for cardiovascular disease are just some applications. Stramigioli believes these insights will change how physics is taught in the years to come! "The ERC grant changed my life, allowing me to focus on my true passion: science. This project provided deeper insights into complex systems, with tools that could revolutionize engineering, healthcare, and more." 🍋👀 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 If you missed oud, no worries, here are the key takeaways and ‘fresh perspectives’ of the Robotics Day 2024! ⚕️𝗜𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆? No, but it will improve treatment through the synergistic relationship with artificial intelligence and image guidance. 🎓 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 Robots will need continuous, interactive learning to deal with the changing dynamics of the environment it needs to operate in. And on top of that, people using the robot will need to train pre-trained algorithms further (through teaching the robot) to accommodate their (individual) needs. So a joint task between robot and human! 🦾 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀: 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗲𝗿-𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀? When developing robotics technology, we should aim for generic rather than particular solutions with a representation-rich and accurate-enough robotic world model. 🤖 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲? 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? When introducing robots in your organization, always assess the impact and listen to your employees: they should be enhanced by technology, not replaced by it. 🍋👀⬇️💬 What are your thoughts on this? We love to hear your fresh perspective, put it in the comments below! 👋 See you next year!
