Meet the Van der Hoeven dreamteam In Riyadh! This week, I got to spend time with the students of the Greenhouse Production and Business Management Program in Riyadh, together with my fellow dreamteam-members Wejdan Abdulaziz, Godfried Dol and Dick de Jong. The program - an initiative of Netherlands Enterprise Agency – is developed by TOPIAN, Dutch Greenhouse Delta and Estidamah, The National Research and Development Center for Sustainable Agriculture. We interacted with the students on various subjects, and Godfried and myself had the privilege of introducing the group of young professionals into our world of global high tech horticulture. We explored the technology behind high tech greenhouses, how a greenhouse nowadays is tailored to address the climatic and economic challenges, and of course also how it can be operated successfully. After all, if we build an F1 car for our clients, but not teach them how it should be driven, a crash becomes inevitable. It was inspiring to experience the level of knowledge, interest and enthusiasm within the group of young women and men, and we hope the Greenhouse Production and Business Management Program will inspire them to become a part of our amazing industry and join us in addressing the global challenges that lie ahead of us in terms of sustainability and circularity in providing global food security. A special thanks to Marc de Ruiter (MSc) and jasper den besten for having us as part of the program and we wish all participants the best of luck and a lot of wisdom for the rest of the course. Good times at the European Water Technology Week! Last week I moderated a session by Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects and Wageningen University & Research on bringing together the water, energy, food and waste sectors. Insights and experiences were shared by Jessie-Lynn van Egmond, Tim Tijsma and Alexander van Tuyll, where the focus was on the global challenges and opportunities for greenhouse horticulture in providing food security while also contributing to the circular economy and water security. We’ve said it before and I will say it again: “Technology is not the limiting factor. What we need is an integrated multi-sectoral, multi-scale stakeholder approach between water, energy, food and waste to prepare for the future”. Although we’re not there yet, feedback from the audience gave us the confidence that we are on the right track and that a change on how the private sector and public sector are co-operating is needed … and that this change is coming! Dit eiland is een prachtig voorbeeld van een duurzaamheidsinitiatief in Nederland: het is volledig zelfvoorzienend in energie, vangt regenwater op en zuivert dit, en streeft naar een circulair systeem waarin afval zoveel mogelijk wordt hergebruikt of gerecycled. We doken dieper de rijke geschiedenis in van het eiland en namen deel aan verschillende activiteiten waarbij we in teams de strijd met elkaar aangingen. Na een middag vol teamwork sloten we af met een gezellige borrel en een heerlijk diner.
