🌿 A gamechanger in plant breeding? Biotic stress factors can be a major obstacle to achieving high-quality, high-yield crops. ✨ What a year it's been for the Lighthouse Farm Academy! From hands-on farm visits across three continents to hosting five Labs that blend theory with practice, 2024 brought incredible milestones. With 84 participants from diverse fields like finance, policy, farming, and academia, we’ve seen how breaking down silos sparks real transformation. 🚜🌱 Check out this inspiring reflection from Lizzy Freed, one of the people behind this amazing programme! ⬇️
Two years ago, Rogier Schulte came to me with a (big) idea: to create a program that could directly link our group's research to practice, to disseminate the knowledge that we've gained from The Global Network of Lighthouse Farms on food systems transformations. Now that intrigued me. At that point, we were already creating educational events for various stakeholders, but there was a clear demand (and need) for lifelong learning opportunities for professionals that didn't have time to do a full MSc degree. And, although Rogier's idea seemed pretty extreme (you want to create a whole new program, with two people?), I'm always happy for a new adventure. But we weren't just two people after all. Enter Miel Hooijdonk/Wageningen Academy: Wageningen's arm for professional education. Miel knows a good idea when he sees one, and decided to join forces with us. We then talked to our friends at Deloitte Sustainability who pair our research perspective with business/practical know-how—they decided to take a leap, too. We all agreed that the most important learning comes from listening to farmers. So, we asked our partners at the The Global Network of Lighthouse Farms if they wanted to host workshops at their farms to complement our theory (they're used to our crazy ideas). Their answer? A resounding yes (spoiler alert: they have even crazier ideas than us). For the next year, we prepared. We brought in a ton of experts from our team and broader WUR community to create our online component (thanks to the wonderful Andrea Bottarel), and piloted three workshops which became our Labs. Fast forward to a year ago: we officially launched the Lighthouse Farm Academy. So, this brings us to today. It's been a full year, and I am so proud of what we have accomplished. 2024 was filled with (minor) growing pains and (major) accomplishments, and I want to just take a moment to look back: ✅ We've had 84 people come through the program, from really diverse backgrounds—from finance, NGOs, policy, academia, farming, and industry. Know what happens when you bring all these perspectives together? You break down the silos that we normally work in—and then something magical happens. We realize that we don't need to (or can't) do this transition alone. ✅ We learned that all the planning we did in 2023 paid off. We co-hosted five Labs, and saw that the blend of theory and practice that we finetuned in our pilot phase is really effective in bringing our lessons to life. Through our farm visits on three continents, we opened ourselves up to the realities that farmers experience every day—which helps us all to more effectively work towards a regenerative future for food. ✅ I'll speak for myself: working to combat climate change can feel too big and too isolating sometimes—but I'm leaving 2024 feeling more hopeful than I did starting it. The collective energy of our partners/participants has shown us the world is ready for change, and with the right tools, we can do it.

FUN FACT 📢 Did you know that ... a caterpillar's highly advanced nose can protect crops without using harmful pesticides? 🐛 Caterpillars can detect various scents in their environment thanks to receptor proteins. Caterpillars of the Large White butterfly (Pieris Brassicae) especially rely on their well-functioning sense of smell to feed on cabbage plants that are toxic to other insects, which unfortunately means they can completely destroy a cabbage harvest. But you can also use their sense of smell to your advantage. If you grow caterpillar-repelling plants along cabbage crops and attractive plants in other areas, you can lure the caterpillars away from the crop. Chemical-free crop protection done right!
