The felt temperature in Istanbul this year reached 45 °C. The exhausts of the busy traffic of this metropole make the heat island effect worse. If current emission trends continue, demand for air conditioning will increase by 70%. The climate crisis and related extreme temperatures are daunting and can have deeper consequences for our lives. But cities like Istanbul are looking at solutions and ensuring that nature is used as a solution to protect its citizens and future generations. Climate change and biodiversity loss are deeply connected. Deforestation fuels climate change, which in turn drives wildfires and further damages ecosystems. Yet, policies still treat them as separate issues. The good news? 2025 is full of opportunities to change this: 🌳 New climate pledges (NDCs) can include nature-based solutions, like forest restoration. 🌊 The biodiversity treaty’s “30x30” goal can protect 30% of land and sea by 2030. 🇧🇷 COP30 in the Amazon can put nature at the heart of climate action. The stakes are high, but progress is possible: Countries that link nature and climate plans will unlock more funding and drive systemic change. Denmark’s approach by restoring peatlands while taxing emissions proves this can work. What’s one action you’d like to see prioritized this year? Inspired by our colleague Wessel van Eeden, introducing the energetic #RestoreLocal - creating local, bottom-up communities and ventures to restore nature in Sub-Saharan Africa. Wishing you and the team all the best! #nature #climate #restoration #RestoreLocal
Promoting solutions | Communications for a greener 🌎 | Restoring Ecosystems | Shared Value Partnership Developer | Restore Local 🌳
After an incredible year at the World Resources Institute, I’m thrilled to share an update on the #RestoreLocal project and its transformative brand and communications journey. Did you know that locally owned and led projects are 6 - 20 times more likely to create lasting impact ? Rather than imposing a top-down branding approach, we went for full co-creation, working with local restoration champions and their communities we co-designed a brand and narrative rooted in their realities. Through workshops, interviews, one-on-one fireside conversations and a lot of tree planting, music, and shared laughter, we connected to their core values, media habits, and creative inspirations, learning so much more about the people than just the numbers. Restore Local works with over 192 local NGO's, and for-profits with a positive climate impact, and a wide network of media, governments, scientists, funders and artists to create real change, from the ground up. On a mission to grow over 1,3 billion trees in these landscapes; 🌳 Where We Work The Great Rift Valley (Kenya) The Lake Kivu & Rusizi River Basin (Rwanda, Burundi, DRC) The Cocoa Belt (Ghana) 🌟 A Movement Rooted in Hope Restore Local is more than a restoration project—it’s a celebration of true community empowerment. From technical training to storytelling under the trees where change happens, this movement is about combining action with inspiration. This year, we’re bringing #RestoreLocal to life even more through dynamic events with farmers, community leaders, government officials, musicians, media houses and local icons to celebrate progress and drive impact. Restoration needs more funding, sure, but it needs so much more, it needs ambassadors, it needs storytelling, it needs state-of-the-art monitoring, and most of all it needs you...All of us can help make nature thrive, by adding value by what you do best we can create a movement that really matters. Huge shout out to all involved but especially; Sean DeWitt, Wanjira Mathai, Dr Susan Chomba, Rebekah Shirley, Ph.D., Willem van der Schoot, Remco Marinus, Peter De Lange, Sven Thierie, Tom Bremerkamp, Havas Lemz 💚, Havas South Africa, Vineel Agarwal, Jerin Tan, Christine Mboya, Eric Schoeffler, Eric Lartey, Peter Ntaganda, Gilbert Muvunankiko, Caroline Njiru, Will Anderson, Trace Afrika, Ben Pol (Benard Paul Mnyang'anga), Don Diablo, Phyllis Kinyanjui, Jort Boot, Godlove Kihupi, Jared Messinger,Bernadette Arakwiye, PhD, Ndunda Peter, Rose L., Mercy Orengo, Thacien MUNYAMAHAME, Ntakirutimana Jean Marie. 🚨Fire alerts, which use satellite data to detect fires based on the heat they generate, have increased as fires spread across Los Angeles County. Over 60 fire alerts have already been detected as of January 9th. More than 40 times the average for the first two weeks of the year from 2012-2024. Let’s make 2025 the year for climate and nature. Few issues are more enmeshed, yet despite their inexorable connection, policymaking for climate and for nature still largely operates in separate spheres. That’s where 2025 can change things. Opportunities this year can help the world finally start addressing climate and nature as the interrelated issues they are. It will require ambition and finance. See how we can bring together the two worlds that are integral to the future of our one planet in my latest from World Resources Institute: https://lnkd.in/gwFhMJ_2

For the first time ever, we have shattered the 1.5°C limit above pre-industrial levels, according to the latest figures of Copernicus ECMWF. It is a sad moment for the planet and humanity, as scientists, activists and citizens have been trying to stop this from happening. But not all is lost. Although we reached it in 2024, it doesn't mean we need to reach this gloomy milestone in the following years. Governments across the globe have the most important mission this year: submit their national plans to transform their economies, reduce emissions, and stop the climate crisis. This plan is called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), and it tells all sectors and industries what they will do to lower GHG emissions. And you? You can message your national government and elected officials and demand a strong NDC for a better year for you, your family and your country.
