Updates

  • This December, Shambani Pro is putting the ‘value’ in value addition. Our new dryer is being installed at the Makueni Hub, ready to tackle post-harvest losses with maximum efficiency. Kenya is one of Africa’s top mango producers, and Makueni accounts for 31% of the country’s mangoes. But here’s the issue: nearly half of all harvested mangoes are lost before they even reach the market. That’s a lot of wasted fruit—and income. Drying mangoes is a simple solution that makes a big difference. It extends shelf life, reduces waste, and creates new opportunities for farmers to sell products like mango chips. With growing exports of fresh and dried mangoes to regions like the Middle East and Europe, there’s real potential here. And let’s not forget how hardy mango trees are. They thrive in dry conditions, making them a lifeline for farmers in places like Makueni. With the right tools in place—like this new dryer—we’re helping farmers make the most of what they already have. • This Wednesday, we hosted a unique Farmer-to-Farmer Market, centered around fresh produce, learning, and collaboration. Farmers brought their crops and livestock to share, but the true highlight was the learning session, where they discovered how to make natural fertilizers and pesticides—essential skills for sustainable, regenerative farming practices. 🌾 Every item at the market was regenerative, grown by farmers who have embraced more sustainable practices. The results speak for themselves: Charles Nzalu, 64, shared how he earned KES 145 per kilo of beans in his latest harvest—his first time achieving such success, thanks to regenerative farming. 👏 We also tested and validated some key assumptions, but the big takeaway was clear: farmers want to be active consumers in the regenerative movement. By working with them, we’re not only strengthening livelihoods, but also taking an approach where improved diets start on the farm and are enjoyed by the very people who grow them. It was incredible to see how each farmer applied regenerative practices in ways that suited their context. From improving soil health to experimenting with new crops, the results spoke for themselves. One of the highlights was seeing how some of the farmers—like those growing herbs such as lemon thyme—are already integrating into supply chain markets. As we continue to build purpose-led businesses in regenerative agriculture, we’re committed to sharing these real-world lessons and insights. We understand that it’s not just about changing the way we farm, but about re-directing the narrative to move towards deeper, more informed conversations around sustainability and resilience in agriculture. A big thank you to Rachael Kirui and the planning team, venture builders Kevin Thiong'o’and Amesa Omega, and our partners at Biovision Africa Trust . #RegenerativeAgriculture #SustainableFarming #SoilHealth #ClimateResilience #Agroecology

  • 20 years ago, Enviu was born out of a simple yet bold belief: businesses can, and should, create a better world. We didn’t have all the answers, but we had big questions and a determination to do things differently. It’s incredible to look back and see how far we’ve come today. From that small beginning in Rotterdam, Netherlands, we’ve grown into a team working across Jakarta, Bangalore, and Nairobi, with 8 years of experience in East Africa. But our focus hasn’t changed: solving real problems by creating ventures that drive positive change for people and the planet. Last week, we marked this milestone with our East Africa community during a heartfelt evening at our offices. The gathering brought together partners and friends for an ideation session, a delicious regeneratively sourced dinner featuring produce from our farms, and a joyful communal painting session during cocktail hour. It was a moment to celebrate how far we’ve come and dream about what’s next—together. We’ve learned so much along the way: 🚀 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞. Every venture we’ve built started with listening, testing, and learning from failure. 🚀𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠. We wouldn’t be here without the trust of communities, the support of our partners, and the commitment of our team. 🚀𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧. Behind every milestone is someone’s story—a farmer earning a fair wage, bringing sustainable produce to market, Women and youth being included, a family finding stability. We know the challenges ahead are immense, but so are the possibilities. We’re more committed than ever to creating ventures that address waste, climate change, inequality, and more—because we know change is possible when we build it together. 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐣𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐥. 𝐀𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐚. Healthy, diverse ecosystems are more resilient, offering critical services like clean air, fertile soil, and pollination—foundational to food production, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods. When we protect biodiversity, we safeguard these systems, ensuring the long-term viability of the industries that depend on them. At Enviu, we’ve been working closely with a core group of farmers to understand their challenges and validate business models that help them work with nature, not against it. Last month, Enviu's Eveline Jansen and Rachael Kirui attended the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)’s Food Beyond the Plate Workshop at Browns Living Food Campus, and we’re still reflecting on the lessons learned. This wasn’t your typical workshop of data-heavy presentations—it was an immersive, hands-on experience rooted deeply in nature. We actually heard the sounds of living bacteria in the soil, making the earth feel more alive than ever. And here's a startling fact: only 2% of soil bacteria have been identified. There's a vast, unseen world beneath our feet that holds so much potential, and we’re only scratching the surface. 🤯 We also tasted dishes made with indigenous grains, thoughtfully crafted to enhance nutrition , and discovered just how much more our food can offer when we diversify what’s on our plates. The solutions to healthier food systems are right beneath our feet, quietly thriving, if only we choose to nurture them. In the spirit of nourishing ourselves and the planet, here’s a weekend treat for the nutrient adventurous: Njahi Brownies made with nutrient-rich black beans.
