“When people remain empowered to bring change, those changes will happen. Without such people or without support for them, what changes could we possibly talk about?” Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Educational Human Rights House Chernihiv (EHRHC) has provided support to over 1,500 human rights defenders, journalists, and activists affected by the war. “When we survey beneficiaries [of Protection Program] and ask whether they were able to continue their civic activities after receiving support, over 90% say "yes". This prompts reflection—how many wouldn’t have managed without the support or if it had been less comprehensive? I believe only about 30% would?” - says Hennadii Vypynashko. He coordinated EHRHC Protection Program for over 2.5 years and together with representatives from the Institute of Mass Information, Independent media outlet “Graty”, and Human Rights House Crimea is a member of the verification council for Human Rights Centre ZMINA’s emergency support fund for activists. In this interview for HRHF, he shares stories of impact from the frontline, his deeply personal motivation for supporting others, and why collaboration with international and local organisations is vital: https://bit.ly/4gEMk8h Portrait by Ukrainian war photographers Kostiantyn and Vlada Liberov. Educational Human Rights House Protection Program was implemented within the ESU / STIYKIST regional project that provides opportunities for emergency support for Ukrainian civil society and independent media in the wake of the full-scale Russian invasion. ESU is funded by the European Union and implemented by ERIM International-led coalition of partners including Belarusian Human Rights House, Human Rights House Tbilisi, East Europe Foundation (EEF), Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation and HRHF.

This international #HumanRightsDay we honour all the brave defenders working to protect human rights, sometimes at the price of their own safety. Today we share the #PortraitsofStrength of Natia Tavberidze, the coordinator of the Human Rights House Tbilisi and her interview, where she shares: “I believe the primary motivation behind my human rights work is the fight for equality—equal rights and freedoms for all.” “Today, people in Georgia are fighting against authoritarianism. Through restrictive legislation, repressive policies and practices, heavy human rights violations from the side of state authorities. The government is attacking anyone who is standing up for their rights and freedoms.” “Rapid democratic decline and the shift toward authoritarian rule are already a reality in Georgia. Despite this, the country has a strong and active civil society… more people are stepping up as human rights defenders.” Read more: https://bit.ly/47OmdbI The portrait of Natia Tavberidze was taken by Tamta Chkhaidze at one of the bridges connecting "Shatili Buildings" in Tbilisi, Georgia, in September 2024. Portraits of Strength: Women Defending Human Rights, now in its third edition, celebrates Women Human Rights Defenders from across the Network of #HumanRightsHouses and highlights the human rights situation in their countries.

🚨 Legal bullying shows no sign of slowing down in Europe. Today, on #InternationalAntiCorruptionDay, The Coalition against SLAPPs in Europe (CASE) (CASE) and The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation publish a new Report on SLAPPs: Mapping Trends and Cases. SLAPPs - Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation - are abusive legal cases used to intimidate and silence those who expose corruption, environmental damage, and other misconduct. Key findings for 2023: ⚫ 166 cases in 2023 alone ⚫ The majority of cases relate to corruption or environmental issues ⚫ Businesses and politicians are the biggest legal bullies ⚫ Journalists, in their independent capacity, are worst hit ⚫ The most SLAPPs were filed in Italy, Romania, Serbia and Turkey ⚫ SLAPPs were recorded for the first time in several European countries SLAPPs pose a grave threat to democracy and free expression, and must be stopped. Without stronger protections, public participation will continue to be eroded by those seeking to silence dissent. Read the report here 👉 https://lnkd.in/d7uEm6TV #StopSLAPPs

“In recent months, Serbia has witnessed an alarming crackdown on its civic space. This has unfolded through a wave of arrests, smear campaigns, and repressive tactics aimed at silencing dissent and undermining democratic principles. These actions, exacerbated by growing Russian and Chinese influence, reveal a systematic effort of Serbia’s authorities to suppress civil society and stifle public dissent.” Read more in the latest Op-Ed by Dragoslava Barzut and Alma Mustajbašić, from Civic Initiatives / Građanske inicijative. https://bit.ly/3CP9REN
