Are European trucks fueling Russia’s war economy? 🚛   We are proud that the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung drew on data and research from the Norwegian Helsinki Committee and our partner Corisk for their critical investigation into the alarming issue of sanctioned European (primarily German) trucks continuing to reach #Russia.   🛑 Despite sanctions and the significant physical size of these goods, hundreds of new European trucks have been advertised for sale by Russian vendors this fall.   🪖 Logistics are fundamental to war. Because of sanctions, Russia’s railroads are less efficient. Logistics on wheels—trucks and truck parts—are becoming indispensable for servicing the Russian war economy and frontline operations.   Russia’s import of trucks skyrocketed 📈 after the full-scale invasion, especially in the winter of 2023, when it became apparent that the war would not be over quickly.   Among German or German-owned truck producers, Daimler Truck emerges as the most significant case: Russia imported approximately 11 times more worth of Daimler trucks in 2023 (€202 million) than in 2022 (€18 million), often via intermediaries and subsidiaries.   A new #EU directive on restrictive measures and penalties is set to be implemented in Germany 🇩🇪.   Continued trade with Russia could lead to violations of sanction laws or even complicity in international crimes committed by Russian forces in #Ukraine 🇺🇦.   Germany must do more to stop this trade, and so must the companies. While many companies pay a price for adhering to sanctions, some appear to treat these restrictions as business opportunities, undermining collective efforts.   As NHC’s Aage Borchgrevink stated: “It makes you question whether they understand what is at stake.”   Accountability and ethical business practices are essential—not only for Ukraine's sake but also for the integrity of the international community.   Full article (in German): https://lnkd.in/dxz4P65b   #SanctionsCompliance #EthicalBusiness #Accountability #Logistics #InternationalLaw
