  • Have you considered your water footprint? 💧🌍 While carbon footprint is a hot topic, let's not forget about its lesser-known sibling: water footprint. Many think it's just about showers and laundry, but the reality is far more complex. Every product we consume, from a cup of coffee to a pair of jeans, has "virtual water" embedded within it. The first image reveals the global flow of the 50 largest virtual water fluxes. Notice how water-stressed regions (dark green arrows) often export water-intensive goods to high-income countries, highlighting the global imbalance in water consumption. The second image provides a glimpse into the average water footprint of various products. But surprisingly, the same product can have vastly different water footprints depending on its origin. For example, a tomato produced in Spain requires 44 times more irrigation water than in Switzerland. By being mindful of these impacts and considering the origin of the goods we consume, we can make more water-conscious choices. #waterfootprint #virtualwater #waterstewardship #waterinnovation #watersustainable

  • Sinking cities: A growing challenge for water & wastewater management Rising sea levels are a well-known challenge, but did you know many coastal cities are sinking even faster than the rising water? A new Nature Sustainability study reveals that land subsidence—caused by groundwater extraction and urban weight—can accelerate coastal land loss at alarming rates. Using satellite radar, researchers measured subsidence in 48 major coastal cities, home to 20% of the global urban population. For water and wastewater management, the impact is massive ⚠️ - Pipes crack and shift: Uneven sinking damages water and sewer pipes, leading to costly leaks and service disruptions. - Flooding gets worse: Lower land elevation weakens drainage systems, making urban flooding more frequent and severe. - Saltwater intrudes into water supplies, threatening drinking water security. - Pump stations under pressure: Wastewater systems rely on gravity flows, but land sinking alters gradients, forcing utilities to upgrade or relocate infrastructure. For European cities, the study may not place them in the top 10, but that doesn’t mean they are safe. Many cities are experiencing localised subsidence and coastal erosion, increasing their exposure to flood risks. Stronger resilience planning, groundwater management, and smart adaptive infrastructure investments are more critical than ever. #waterinnovation #watertech #urbanresilience #digitalwater #smartwater

  • Is AI the key to unlocking true digital transformation in water utilities? (Thank you, Mads, one of the water nerds at InfoTiles, for starting the conversation) The water sector faces a major challenge: legacy systems that weren’t designed for seamless data analysis. With so many existing tools in place, the last thing utilities need is yet another complex system to manage. 💡 AI as a Service (AiAAS) could be the game-changer (is it? 🤔 ). Instead of forcing utilities to rip and replace their systems, AI-powered agents can seamlessly integrate into their existing infrastructure, working in the background to: 1. Analyse data in real time to optimise operations 2. Detect and predict issues before they escalate 3. Reduce the burden on staff by automating insights InfoTiles is using and exploring different approaches to AI that can unlock value from existing data while giving utilities full control—turning data into action without the usual procurement headaches. Does this approach resonate with you?

Alert – Water and Tech nerdish post 😊🌊 Will AiAAS (Ai as a Service) be the way to get water utilities to actually become digital? Over the years, I’ve been proud to deliver massively innovative solutions to water utilities through InfoTiles on our Platform, based on a traditional SaaS model. And yes, it works well—but as many of you know, our industry is notoriously slow when it comes to digital transformation. It’s not for lack of will or competency; it’s because many utilities are steeped in legacy systems that just don’t talk to each other. Data was never really meant to be analysed in these environments, and the sheer volume of tailored work required stops many from even starting. With hundreds of systems already in place, do these utilities really need the 201st? Having studied the possibilities with AiAAS, I’m becoming more and more convinced that this could be the holy grail for digitalising the water utility sector #digitalwater At InfoTiles could easily change our approach by providing tailored AI agents that slot seamlessly into a utility’s existing setup—fitting like a glove. These agents would work quietly in the background, continuously monitoring operations, flagging potential issues before they escalate, and even taking early action where needed. These agents are tailor-made to integrate within legacy systems, can be run locally, and essentially could act as the catalyst to bridge the gap between outdated infrastructure and a future where data isn’t just collected but actively used to drive smarter, more efficient operations. Furthermore, because the agents would be wholly owned by the utility, they’d be treated as a CAPEX investment. This makes procurement easier and reduces dependency on external providers. If you have managed to read this far, I’d love to get your feedback. Does this make sense? Am I missing something here? SWAN - The Smart Water Networks Forum InfoTiles Digital WaterArupBretton Davis

  • The world’s glaciers are melting at an alarming rate — Antarctica alone is losing 142 gigatons of ice per year (see short video from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration 👇 ). While this may seem distant, the consequences are hitting closer to home than we think. Why does this matter? - Rising sea levels threaten coastal communities and freshwater supplies - Unpredictable water cycles intensify droughts and flooding - Aging infrastructure struggles to keep up with climate-driven extremes Water utilities and municipalities are facing increasing challenges, but #data and #innovation offer a way forward. ============ 🚀 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐦𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟓𝐭𝐡! #Infotiles and Arup co-host the Water Innovation Workshop to turn challenges into opportunities.
