🌎 The recent cyber attack on US treasury systems once again highlights the need to have various defense in depth mechanisms to reduce the attack surface and thus contain any possible losses. 🗞️ Here is some Omny Insights from our team of experts. https://lnkd.in/d7enENFp Although this cyber attack is not directly related to OT systems, similar technologies are used by end users to get remote support and/or remote monitoring and control of manufacturing systems, thus making OT/ICS systems vulnerable to such attacks. Initial analysis of this attack points to attackers gaining access to 3rd party supplier’s cryptographic keys and using them to gain access to the end users systems. This shows that supply chain and third party cyber management is crucial for maintaining a secure system design. All too often we see corporations trusting suppliers and third parties enough to grant them unrestricted access to their systems, increasing the risk of breach (E.g. Solarwinds breach 2020). Corporations would need to scrutinize suppliers and third party API key management and access procedures to make sure that they are following best practices in order to be considered secure. 👀 Also, being able to detect and mitigate such breaches, requires having various other defense in depth cyber solutions, in conjunction with secure remote access, can reduce the attack surface as listed below: 📍 Have a Role based access control (RBAC) solution implemented on the OT systems infrastructure with a least privilege access. 📍 Have network segmentation and micro segmentation with no direct access through public networks to systems on L3 and below. 📍 A remote access solution should have the necessary controls to initiate and terminate remote sessions from plant based admins. 📍 Implement a Key management infrastructure with policies for periodic (time based/user based) key rotation. 📍 Have multi-factor authentication (MFA) for initiating remote access sessions 📍 Implement Remote Session Management controls 📍 Have properly defined incident response procedures to identify and respond to such security events 💡As always, the above solutions require deployment and maintenance by properly trained security professionals in order to get the maximum value out of your security investments. #cybernews #omny #cyberevent #OTsecurity #ITsecurity Rajesh Kenge Tommy Evensen
