🏥Big Things Are Happening in Pukekohe! We're beyond excited to be part of the team revitalising this facility (once the Auckland City Council Service Centre) into a multi-functional healthcare hub. Spanning 2600m², this building is getting a major makeover to bring a day-stay clinic, modern consultation rooms, and staff accommodations to the heart of the community. Half of the existing structure is being dismantled (out with the old, in with the bold) while we overhaul its core design from the ground up to make way for the new. Given the high standards of the medical sector, fire protection takes centre stage in our plans. Every detail is meticulously designed and engineered with safety as the top priority. Did you know that fire safety has a history of over two centuries? It all started in 1812 with Sir William Congreve’s manual sprinkler system, which used perforated pipes to combat flames. Fast forward to Hiram Stevens Maxim, who invented the first automatic sprinkler after witnessing frequent factory fires. Talk about innovation! In 1874, Henry S. Parmalee took things up a notch with his clever system that released water when a special solder melted in a fire. He aimed to convince insurance companies that investing in fire protection would save them money, and it worked, albeit slowly at first. Enter Frederick Grinnell, who transformed Parmalee’s design into a more reliable and sensitive sprinkler system. Grinnell’s company grew through innovative mergers but faced challenges over monopoly claims. Undeterred, it flourished and was acquired by Tyco in 1976, expanding its reach globally. One standout moment in fire protection history occurred in Auckland in 1887 when Josiah Firth installed New Zealand’s first Grinnell system in his flour mill. His successful demonstration of the system’s effectiveness won over city officials, paving the way for widespread adoption.
