  • Have you met Gaz? You might have seen him around your building installing sprinklers. We took some time to ask Gaz some questions. Q: What is the funniest misunderstanding you have had on a job? G: When I first arrived in New Zealand, I was asked if I was going for a Smoko… I said no I don’t smoke, and just carried on working oblivious to what I was actually asked. Q: If I had a superpower what would it be? G: Would love to fly, just to avoid traffic. Q: If SPFP had a theme song, what would it be? G: The Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. Q: What is your go to snack during a long day? G: Got to be a good old banana. Lost in translation can at times be a disaster but sometimes it obviously increases efficiencies. If you see Gaz around working through a break, maybe offer him a banana. #FireSafety #SPFP #GetToKnowUs #WhoWeAre www.southpacificfire.co.nz

  • Santa’s Summer Naughty List: Overloaded Power Sockets, and Crispy Christmas Trees! It’s a Kiwi Christmas! Sun’s out, BBQ’s sizzling, and the office is winding down. But before you hit the beach, let’s make sure your workplace doesn’t end up as Santa’s hottest stop this summer. Here’s your Christmas Fire Safety Checklist. Electrical Safety 🔌 Turn off and unplug all non-essential electrical devices, such as computers, printers, and coffee machines. 💡 Inspect Christmas lights and decorations for frayed wires or broken bulbs before turning them on. 🚫 Avoid overloading power outlets or using daisy-chained extension cords. Christmas Tree and Decorations 🎄 If using a real tree, ensure it is well-watered to avoid drying out, which increases fire risk. 🎇 Use LED Christmas lights that emit less heat. 🔥 Keep all decorations away from heat sources, such as heaters, candles, or radiators. 🚮 Remove real trees promptly after the holiday to reduce the fire hazard of dry needles. Heating and Cooling Systems 🛠️ Service ventilation systems to ensure they are functioning properly and not at risk of overheating. 🌡️ Turn off heaters and cooling systems during the holiday closure (unless required for sensitive equipment). Kitchen and Appliances 🍳 Ensure the kitchen is clean and free of grease or flammable materials. 🔥 Double-check that ovens, microwaves, and other appliances are switched off. 💨 Empty the trash bins, especially if they contain flammable materials. Fire Safety Equipment 🧯 Verify that fire extinguishers are fully charged and accessible. 🚨 Test fire alarms and smoke detectors to ensure they are functioning. 🚪 Ensure fire exits are clear and accessible at all times. Holiday Closure Safety 🔒 Assign a staff member to perform a final check of the building before locking up. 🧹 Clear clutter and combustibles from around the workplace, especially near machinery or storage areas. 📝 Provide employees with a contact list for emergencies, including the fire safety officer’s details. Planning Ahead 🗓️ Schedule a fire safety drill before the holidays to refresh employee knowledge. 🛠️ Confirm all emergency lighting systems are operational. 🔋 Replace batteries in all smoke and fire detectors. Specific Considerations for Vacant Offices 🕵️ Arrange for periodic inspections of the workplace during the holiday closure. 🌡️ Set the thermostat to a safe temperature to avoid extreme cold or overheating that could lead to electrical failures. Post-Holiday Restart 🔄 Conduct a thorough inspection of all systems when the workplace reopens. 🧽 Remove any holiday decorations safely and store them properly for next year. Taking a few proactive steps now can ensure your workplace stays fire-safe and ready to welcome the new year. Share this checklist with your team to spread the responsibility! 🎄🔥 Not sure about everything you need to check, contact us at www.southpacificfire.co.nz #FireSafety #SantasLittleHelpers #Christmas #HolidaySeason

  • The fire safety expert in the hot box today is your technician Lin. We took some time, to ask Lin some questions, and it is fair to say the response was lyrical. Q: What is unexpected skill you have? L: I can play the piano. Q: What office crime are you most guilty off? L: Permanently borrowing pens. Q: What is the weirdest thing in your work bag right now? L: Pens from many different companies. Q: What is one thing you wish clients knew about your job? L: It is critical for safety. Q: What is the superpower you would love to have? L: Superspeed (Flash Lin) So if Lin pops in for your next alarm check, and you happen to have a piano sitting around, you have our permission to hit him up for a free concert. Just make sure to check you still have your pen after he “borrows” it for that autograph. #SPFP #FireSafety #GettingToKnowOurTeam #TeamWork

  • South African import Selwyn knows everything there is to know about sprinklers, we figured it is about time we knew a bit more about him. Q: What is the strangest fire hazard you have spotted? S: I was once treated to witness a 240 Volt cable setup right next to a gas open flame cooker. Q: What is the “office crime” you regularly commit? S: “Borrowing” slices of bread (cupcakes). Q: What work superpower do you wish you had? S: Pausing time when I just need those few extra hours in a day…I am sure others can relate. Q: If you had to explain your job to a 5-year-old what would you say? S: We make sure that buildings don’t burn down. Selwyn has given us some food for thought especially around how great it would be to pause time for a long lunch every day. Do listen to Selwyn though and keep those electrical cables far away from open flames. #SPFP #Authentic #OurPeople #RealTalk

  • 🚨STOP THE PRESSES!🚨 SPFP has officially gone full Mo-Mafia this Movember. Look at these blokes. We’re serving everything from “accountant with a secret” to “could be your next action movie villain.” Front and centre, Quinton’s rocking the “do NOT mess with me” Mo, while Matt is giving us “rugged, but spreadsheets are my passion.” And let’s not overlook Rod on the top right, with a moustache so confident it probably signs contracts on his behalf. But hey, this isn’t just about looking like extras in a 70s cop drama. We’re growing these bad boys to raise funds for Movember—supporting mental health, suicide prevention, and kicking prostate and testicular cancer in the guts. Here’s where you come in. Think these Mo’s deserve a round of applause? Then please lend a hand. Donate to the cause at our SPFP team page: https://lnkd.in/gbcaCKMt Whether it’s $5 or $500, every dollar makes a difference. Plus, it keeps us from having to stage a bake sale (trust me, you don’t want to try Quinton’s brownies). C’mon, folks, dig deep! Help us turn these lip warmers into life changers. #SPFPTeam #Movember #MoustacheLegends #DonateOrWeKeepGrowing

  • We want to congratulate Peter Belcher our compliance supervisor who has just received his Level 4 certificate in inspections for fire systems. We thought we would take the time to get to know Peter a little better. Q: What superpower would you like to have? P: Flying to avoid traffic. Q: What snack gets you through the day? P: Chocolate and a coke. Q: What is the office “crime” you are most guilty of? P: Always the last to clean out the dishwasher. At SPFP we are always excited to see our staff grow, in knowledge, and skill set. #SPFP #Training #Qualification

  • What to Do if Your Fire Extinguisher Has Expired. Did you know fire extinguishers have expiration dates? If yours has expired, it may not work properly when you need it most. Here’s how to check for signs of expiry and what steps to take to replace or service it. 1. Expiration Date on the Label: Check the manufacturer’s label for the expiration date. Most fire extinguishers last 5. If it’s past this date, it’s time to Pressure test or replace it. 2. Pressure Gauge: Look at the pressure gauge. If the needle is in the red (low pressure) zone, it means the extinguisher may not have enough pressure to operate properly and should be serviced or replaced. 3. Inspection Tag: Examine the inspection or service tag. If the extinguisher hasn’t been inspected or serviced in over a year, it may not be in optimal condition. 4. Physical Damage: Check the extinguisher for visible damage, such as dents, corrosion, or rust. Any physical damage could affect the extinguisher’s functionality. 5. Hose or Nozzle Blockages: Inspect the hose or nozzle for blockages or cracks. If there are any obstructions or signs of wear, the extinguisher may not work properly. 6. Broken Seal: Check if the safety seal or tamper tag is broken or missing. If it’s broken, it may have been used or tampered with and might need to be inspected or recharged. 7. Leaking: Look for any signs of leakage around the nozzle or body of the extinguisher. A leaking extinguisher may not have sufficient contents to function properly. 8. Discharge Pin: Ensure the discharge pin is in place and not loose or missing. Without this pin, the extinguisher could accidentally discharge. If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to service or replace your fire extinguisher. Keep your safety equipment in top shape so it’s ready when needed. Unsure?
