📢 New Online Event Topic: Introducing International Business Communication Standards for Better Reporting Guest Speaker: Colin Wu, CPA Host & Co-host: Sophie Chen Yan Yang Date & Time: Thursday, January 30, 2025 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM Auckland, GMT+13 In today’s data-driven world, organisations increasingly rely on actionable insights to make decisions. This puts pressure on analysts to deliver clear insights and on audiences to interpret them quickly. However, many dashboards fail due to inconsistencies, misleading visuals, and poor usability. The International Business Communication Standards (IBCS) address these issues by promoting clarity and consistency in visualising and communicating quantitative information. Inspired by pioneers like Edward Tufte’s Graphical Excellence and Barbara Minto’s Pyramid Principle, IBCS offers a practical framework for turning raw data into clear, decision-ready intelligence. This session will explore the core IBCS principles, structured around the "SUCCESS" formula. You’ll discover how semantic notation taps into natural pattern recognition to highlight insights instantly, how conceptual rules build a compelling storyline, and how perceptual rules ensure graphical integrity with effective visuals. Key takeaways: - Importance of Clarity in Data Visualization - Introduction to IBCS - SUCCESS Formula - Semantic Notation - Conceptual and Perceptual Rules - Actionable Framework About Speaker: Colin Wu, CPA has more than 20 years’ experience in Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), Business Analysis, and Data Analytics in multinational organisations. He is both a CPA and an IBCS® Certified Analyst. Currently, he is the Manager of the Performance and Insights Team in a public sector organisation in Wellington, where he transforms complex financial and non-financial data into clear, actionable insights for the executive leadership team. Another fantastic evening in partnership with Victoria University of Wellington. This time, we hosted our first-ever TEDx-style event, MBusAn Graduate Stories: How to Stand Out from the Competition? We had four fantastic Alumni of the MBusAn Programme who shared their international student study and career journeys to becoming Business Analysts, with a keen and eager-to-learn audience of over 50 current students, alumni, guests, and staff. Thank you to Anshul Sharma, Ananya Garg, Jackie Yan, and Dana Abiyoga for sharing your open and inspiring journeys to becoming Business Analysts. Your insights on making the most of university life, tips for building networks, embracing opportunities, and celebrating small wins truly resonated with the audience, especially at a very timely part of the student journey. The lessons shared at this event were some of the advice and guidance we wish we had known on our own BA journeys. It was a lovely night of stories and insights to give back to the next generation of Business Analysts and help move them a few steps closer to their personal goals. It’s incredible to see how the BA Career Meetup—established no less than two years ago by alumni Sophie Chen, continues to foster a strong partnership with the programme, delivering valuable, tailored and curated networking and knowledge-sharing events for students. A special shoutout to our incredible student and alumni-led volunteer group, who planned, organised, and delivered this truly unique by-the-student-for-the-student event with support from our academia partners at Victoria University of Wellington. Well done to current students Theora Dang, Beibei Ma, Chris Lei, and alumni Zi Ye Tey for dedicating themselves to delivering the event. Thanks also to Jackie Yan, who was part of the volunteer team and spoke beautifully, sharing her story. Special mention goes to Gregory Thomas Ng for his timely advice and support behind the scenes. Finally, a big thank you to Charlotte Deans and Jocelyn Cranefield for your ongoing support from the VUW Professional Programmes Offices. We are looking forward to organising future events and continuing to support the journeys of MBusAn students, to grow together as new in career and aspiring BAs.

A heartfelt thank you to the Victoria University of Wellington PPO and MBusAn program for their continued support in making these events possible!

From Audience to Host: What a Journey! Six months ago, I was sitting in the audience at my first networking event. Today, I stood on the stage as the host—YES, I DID IT! This experience has taught me so much. My biggest takeaways? ✨ Take every opportunity, say yes more often. No opportunity is too small; every step matters. ✨ Keep pushing your limits, growth happens outside your comfort zone. ✨ Maintain your 'toolkit', keep learning and refining your skills. ✨ Start networking today, it’s never too late to build connections. Networking is essential in today’s competitive job market. A massive thank you to our incredible speakers Anshul Sharma, Jackie Yan, Ananya Garg and Dana Abiyoga for bringing joy, humor, vulnerability, insights, practical tips, and inspiring stories.
