Last night was a celebration of three years of hard work, design thinking, and emerging talent as third year students on the Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Ara Institute of Canterbury held their end of year Ara Exit Exhibition & Awards evening. Chow:Hill Architects' Associate and Registered Architect, Jaune-Marie van der Merwe enjoyed attending and seeing the culmination of incredible design talent on show. Having worked closely with the BAS students this year, providing industry critique and mentoring, Jaune-Marie said it was a privilege to see the final results on show. “It’s been an enriching experience and the students have certainly inspired me with their creativity and collaboration throughout the year.” Congratulations to all of the award winners and graduates. We wish them all the best for their future design careers. #industryconnections #mentoringfuturedesigners #emergingtalent #inspireddesign #chowhill #connectcollaboratecreate #shapingpossibilities #shapingcareers #30years Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects

The design history of New Zealand’s hospitals and healthcare facilities is to be captured in a new book by Chow:Hill Architects Principal and Registered Architect, Chris Thom. Drawing on his 25 years’ experience working on hospital projects in both New Zealand and Asia, Chris’ book, the working title of which is “Health Design in New Zealand’”, shares stories of people, places, and companies who have been instrumental in shaping New Zealand’s health design landscape. The book, supported by the NZ Health Design Council, is due for final production and distribution in 2025. Interest is currently being sought for print sponsorship. #designhistory #architecturalhistory #healthdesign #workingtitle #designexpertise #chowhill #connectcollaboratecreate #shapingpossibilities #30years

Mentoring and stewardship is an integral part of Chow:Hill Architects’ ethos and a driving force behind our commitment to work with emerging designers in our industry. During the second half of 2024, there’s been plenty of lively conversations and learning taking place in our Tamaki Makaurau studio as we’ve been joined by Unitec students for a weekly session on studio design. Tasked with a challenging brief to design a unit that provides a supporting and healing environment for people experiencing mental health challenges as part of an existing project, Chow:Hill Senior Principal and Registered Architect Anner Chong, supported by Stuart Mackie & Rajan Hira, have guided the students on healthcare design to ensure the success of this facility. The weekly studio sessions have resulted in plenty of lively conversation, design debates, and learning by all involved. #mentoring #encouragingemergingdesigners #industrypartnership #healthcaredesign #inspireddesign #chowhill #shapingcareers #30years

Sustainable design principles were at the heart of our team’s design for Building F in Union Square Hamilton, now known as Rabobank Centre so we’re thrilled to see it achieve a NABERSNZ rating of 4.5stars. A system for rating the energy efficiency of office buildings, the NABERSNZ rating is recognition of the building’s architecture which includes a dynamic façade designed to maximise natural light while managing solar heat gain. This is combined with strategies such as daylight harvesting, occupancy sensors on lighting, and a high-performance warm roof system. These elements all work together to significantly reduce the building's energy use. Thanks to project partners Foster Group Ltd for helping to bring our vision to life. #commercialdesign #sustainabledesign #collaborativedesign #inspireddesign #chowhill #connectcollaboratecreate #shapingpossibilities #30years
We're proud to announce that Union Square's Building F has achieved a NABERSNZ whole building rating of 4.5 Stars. ⭐️ The rating evaluates energy efficiency, water use, indoor environment quality, and overall sustainability. This achievement reflects our commitment to environmental sustainability, reduces operating costs for tenants, and enhances the work environment. We are incredibly proud of this result! Once the site of a 70-year-old school hall, today work is underway on bringing the Chow:Hill Architects designed multi-purpose building to life for the St Patrick’s School community in Te Awamutu. Situated close to the church and school, our team’s design of the new building has been undertaken in collaboration with St Patrick’s School to meet the school’s requirements. Due to be opened in early 2025, the new facility will provide the community with a modern, welcoming, and sustainably-designed space for school events such as assemblies, prize givings, performances, and art exhibitions. https://lnkd.in/gVDCE9N6 #educationfacility #educationdesign #communityasset #collaborativedesign #chowhill #shapingpossibilities #30years

Chow:Hill Architects’s health design team was privileged to collaborate with fellow project partners Beca, IMB Construction, and Rider Levett Bucknall RLB on this significant health project for Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora in Nelson. The refurbishment of the building on the Braemar Campus has provided the much-needed Paediatric Unit with a permanent home, sharing space with youth mental health services. Wonderful to see the project come to fruition and enable essential services to be delivered to those who need it. Our team were thrilled to have Rototuna Library Te Kete Aronui receive a Bronze award for Spatial Design at last week's Best Awards. The design of this community asset was shaped by collaboration with mana whenua and inspired by the name "Te Kete Aronui", referencing one of the three baskets of knowledge from Maori legend. This project was one our team enjoyed collaborating on with many project partners, including Designwell and AECOM, for our client, Hamilton City Council. https://lnkd.in/gfiAbDaf Chow:Hill Project Team: Sam Thomas Phillip Kempster Jaune-Marie van der Merwe Doug Robinson Rochelle Harker #bestdesign #spatialdesign #communitydesign #civicdesign #bestawards #bronzeaward #nzarchitecture #nzdesign #culturaldesign #inspireddesign #chowhill #connectcollaboratecreate #shapingpossibilities #30years

Known for approaching his designs with an empathetic nature, South African-born architect, Philip Rutkiewicz has made New Zealand home, recently achieving architectural registration status 🎓 Phil R, who's just at home on two wheels as he is in front of REVIT software in Chow:Hill Architects' Tāmaki Makaurau studio, is particularly inspired by living building design and the ongoing adoption of sustainable design principles in the built environment. 🏢 A Registered Architect in his native South Africa as well means Phil is still very much a green and gold rugby supporter when the South African team take on the All Blacks! 🏉 Congratulations on your New Zealand registration Phil! https://lnkd.in/gQ3iA9n6
