Today is International Day of the Girl - a chance to celebrate the achievements of young women everywhere and amplify their voices and leadership potential. At Sport NZ, we are proud to support initiatives like the National GirlBoss New Zealand Awards that recognise young female leaders making a difference in their communities.   Like Roman Amosa, winner of the ‘It’s My Move’ Wellbeing Award! At just 16 years old, Roman is dedicated to improving the health and fitness of young people in her community. After finding a gap in suitable training for her age group, she launched FitTeens with the support of her mum, Deeyana. This programme is transforming the lives of around 120 rangatahi, primarily young Pacific people, by offering a variety of workouts - from plyometric training, to strength and cardio sessions. Participants travel from all over Tāmaki Makaurau, with classes now expanding into West Auckland!.   And Tori Wilson, winner of the Sport NZ Activator Award! Tori is the youngest and only operational female firefighter in the Tasman Rural Fire Brigade. Tori volunteers for community events and in-home safety visits, educating everyone - from preschoolers to the elderly - about fire safety. Her role requires not only courage but also incredible physical stamina in her commitment to keeping her Motueka community safe, such as running from school in 31-degree heat to ensure her team is ready for callouts.   Both Roman and Tori exemplify leadership through physical activity. They inspire us all to make a positive impact in our communities.   Let’s continue to support and uplift young women everywhere! 💪

  • Another awesome turn out this morning, as we brought our Counties Manukau Sports Leaders together for our bi-monthly breakfast, proudly presented by our friends at Toshiba. These breakfasts are a great opportunity to connect and network, as well as share progress our team is making in our community, and what opportunities that may present for clubs and codes out South. We were very lucky to have Auckland Council's Sport and Recreation Lead, Kieran Nevey & Aktive's Active Environments Manager Simon Tattersfield present to those in attendance. Thank you to all of our Counties Manukau sports leaders for attending the breakfast, it's always great bringing our community together over kai and korero. We look forward to bringing our leaders together again before the end of the year for a special Christmas get together. Special thanks once again to our hosts Kolmar, Toshiba for their continued support & Foundation North who enable the mahi we do in the club and code space throughout Counties Manukau. #CLMCommunitySport #GetAktiveAKL #ClubConnect  Craig Carter Bernadette Tovio Maia Lewis MNZM Pat Spellman A.K. Play Systems Advisor

Over the past year myself and a group of colleagues have been working with Kauri Flats School in Takanini to complete a Neighbourhood Play System report. This report highlights some of the key issues our tamariki, whānau and community are experiencing and sets out the current play context at a neighbourhood, city and school level within and surrounding Kauri Flats School. A set of recommendations have been proposed that can be implemented by enablers of play to improve playful opportunities for tamariki from Kauri Flats School. The report is now live on Sport NZ's website as well as the video that was produced to share the purpose of a Neighbourhood Play System report. https://lnkd.in/gYzevHWn This has been a massive kaupapa which wouldn't have been possible without the support from the school and key leaders. Ngā mihi nui rawa atu.

CEO, Entrepreneur and Governance experience | Helping businesses and for-purpose organisations thrive | Highly agile strategist | Championing Inclusive Leadership | Dedicated to advancing Diversity and Equity

Part 1: The latest census data from Stats NZ reveals significant demographic changes in the Counties Manukau region. Notably, the Asian population experienced a remarkable increase of 22% from 2018 to 2023, representing the largest growth rate among all population groups. Part 2: The Active NZ survey, conducted by Sport New Zealand, examines nationwide participation in play, active recreation, and sport. The findings highlight several disparities in physical activity levels among Asian tamariki and rangatahi compared to their peers: ⚽ Less likely to engage in physical activity on a weekly basis. 🏀 Spend less time being physically active. 🏸 Less likely to meet recommended physical activity guidelines. 🎲 Spend less time participating in play and informal activities. 🤼 Spend less time playing with friends or family. 🚴♀️ Engage in fewer activities per week compared to the average. 📉 Less likely to feel encouraged by people in their lives to participate in physical activities. ⬇ Less likely to perceive they have community support to engage in desired physical activities. Part 3: Our community is actively working to reverse these trends through various initiatives. I encourage and welcome anyone interested in making a positive impact to connect with me. Together, we can foster a more inclusive and active environment for our Asian tamariki and rangatahi.
