New Zealand Digital Mental Health (DMH) Kaleidoscope
Ēhara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari kē he toa takitini: "Our strength is not that of a single leader but that of many of us as a collective”
NZ is the optimal size high impact country which remains an enigma and a beacon of hope for its longstanding leadership in the DMH implementation dating back to 2005 under the visionary leadership of none other than legendary Psychiatrist Dr Janice Wilson and then the establishment of Whakarongorau Aotearoa // New Zealand Telehealth Services// in 2015 was a significant milestone in consolidating numerous standalone DMH helplines/services under a unified delivery mechanism informed by a robust clinical governance framework. It was a great honor for the eMental Health International Collaborative (eMHIC) delegation including global DMH domain subject matter experts - Katherine (Kathy) Hay ICD.D, CEO and President of Kids Help Phone, and Professor Andrew Greenshaw, University of Alberta to meet with NZ Minister for Mental Health Hon Matt Doocey and hear his vision about improving access and systems navigation. It was inspiring to note how Minister Doocey intends to build on the existing DMH foundation and to get that process right by design, he is holding a DMH Summit in NZ Parliament on 10 Dec 2024.

Meeting with Karen Orsborn and the Board of Te Hiringa Mahara - Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission of NZ further strengthened the conviction about the right foundational elements in place to continue to drive innovative approaches to improve access to MH services. Ryl Jensen your energy in bringing the entire NZ sector together needs to be applauded.
High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, Her Excellency Neeta Bhushan is inspired by New Zealand's leadership in this highly specialized niche domain and is exploring how to join the dots between NZ and the Government of India. Mental health has no geo-political boundaries: one world, one family, one future.
The highlight of NZ visit without a doubt was an invitation from Anya Satyanand, ED, Ember Innovations to visit Ngā Tūmanako o Kahurangi, the Māori unit at Auckland Girls Grammar School on Tues 19 Nov 2024 to hear young indigenous perspectives on mental health. It is based on the principles of te reo and tikanga Maori (Māori language and indigenous values), developing te taha hinengaro (mental health), tinana (physical health) and wairua (spiritual health), mana wahine (strength as young women), and striving for excellence in all aspects of school life.
