We’re pleased to see central government highlight tourism’s role in New Zealand’s economic growth. As our GM Nicola Greenwell says, this is a welcome shift that perfectly aligns with our mission at Hamilton & Waikato Tourism to attract visitors, encourage longer stays, foster deeper engagement, and support local operators. While challenges like securing sustainable funding persist for RTOs like us, hearing the central government’s commitment to supporting tourism growth gives us hope for a brighter future. #WaikatoTourism #Tourism #EconomicGrowth #RegionalDevelopment #MightyWaikato
We’re embracing a sense of optimism and possibility with our mantra: “Thrive in 2025.” We’re thrilled to welcome Hon. Louise Upston, MP for Taupō and proud Waikato resident, as the newly appointed Tourism & Hospitality Minister. Her appointment, alongside recent comments from the Minister of Finance, Nicola Willis MP, and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, brings fresh hope for the tourism sector: - “When we’ve got more tourists coming, more tourists spending, that’s good for jobs, it’s good for growth, and it’s good for the wealth of individual New Zealand families.” Hon Nicola Willis - “Government could do more to support tourism growth.” Prime Minister Christopher Luxon Hearing tourism highlighted as part of New Zealand’s economic growth agenda is a welcome and promising signal for the sector—and for Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs). As RTOs, we often face challenges securing local government funding. For example, our own funding decreased by 18% during last year’s Long-Term Plans, and we’re gearing up for further processes this year. Sadly, this isn’t unique—many RTOs nationwide are in similar positions, with ongoing funding battles creating significant challenges for visitor destinations. To put things in perspective: when comparing local government contributions to RTO activities on a per capita basis, the mighty Waikato ranks 28th out of 30 regions. Yes, we’re battling for a competitive edge. At its core, our role is to attract visitors to our region, encourage longer stays, foster deeper engagement, and support local operators to deliver exceptional visitor experiences. The results? Stronger visitor spending, economic growth, sustainable businesses, more jobs, and thriving communities. Simply put: Visitation = Jobs. That’s why hearing central government’s focus on economic growth and tourism is music to our ears. Of course, the devil will be in the detail—but perhaps 2025 really is the year to thrive!
