The ISANA Inc International Education Association Transitions Forum brought together high school and tertiary sectors to share insights and discuss the challenges international students face. Thanks to Joy Hotter and Chris Beard for inviting me to speak on the panel; some excellent observations and practical ways to support these students were made. Massey student, Rachel Hu, bravely shared her own experience coming to a new country as a young teenager, reminding us of the many obstacles international students must navigate.

  • 🤝 Join our FREE International Education Research Seminar tomorrow Tuesday 5th November 12pm-1pm NZST. Workplace exploitation of people on temporary work and study visas has become commonplace in Aotearoa New Zealand. In this presentation we highlight the significance of emotions as a key dimension of the actualisation of workplace exploitation experienced by temporary migrants. Join the Teams meeting here, no need to register: https://lnkd.in/gkRcapHK Our presentation addresses three key emotional dimensions of workplace exploitation that emerged in this research: inducement into exploitation, entrapment and the emotional sustenance of exploitation. Through this account we demonstrate how unfreedom is felt in the lives of temporary migrants and point towards the need to rethink both scholarly accounts of forced labour and policy responses to the workplace exploitation of temporary migrants. Francis Collins is Professor of Sociology at Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland. His recent research addresses the regulation and experiences of temporary migration, racism and workplace exploitation. Francis is currently involved in research programmes focused on Working to End Racial Oppression (based in Aotearoa New Zealand) and Liberating Migrant Labour? International mobility programmes in settler colonial contexts (involving Christina and other researchers in Australia, Canada and Aotearoa New Zealand). Christina Stringer is Associate Professor of International Business and Director of the Centre for Research on Modern Slavery, at the University of Auckland Business School. She has been researching migrant worker exploitation in New Zealand for well over a decade, with a recent focus on the Migrant Exploitation Protection Visa. Pii-Tuulia Nikula, Chris Beard
