The Capabilities for Life Framework describes 10 core capabilities for people to flourish in the 21st-century
The capabilities are meant to support success in life by nurturing various skills and dispositions across personal, social, and professional contexts.
Developed by The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce), this framework outlines how 10 core capabilities (each 'C') shapes mindset, then behaviour, then action.
For instance:
1️⃣ Change
Mindset: Being open to new experiences and flexible in thinking.
Behaviour: Embracing uncertainty and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth.
Action: Adapting to new environments, learning new skills, and making necessary adjustments in response to change.
2️⃣ Collaboration
Mindset: Valuing teamwork, shared goals, and collective success.
Behaviour: Actively listening, cooperating with others, and recognising diverse contributions.
Action: Working effectively in groups to achieve shared objectives, building networks, and facilitating others' contributions.
3️⃣ Communication
Mindset: Understanding the importance of clear expression and empathy in interactions.
Behaviour: Engaging in open dialogue, clarifying ideas, and listening attentively to others.
Action: Conveying thoughts and emotions effectively through speaking, writing, or other mediums, and adjusting communication based on feedback.
4️⃣ Care
Mindset: Prioritising the wellbeing of others and being attuned to their needs.
Behaviour: Showing empathy, offering help, and demonstrating concern for others.
Action: Taking practical steps to support and nurture the physical, emotional, and mental health of others.
5️⃣ Creativity
Mindset: Believing in the possibility of creating something new and valuing imagination.
Behaviour: Experimenting with different ideas, taking creative risks, and thinking outside the box.
Action: Implementing innovative ideas, developing unique solutions, and creating new works or products.
In each case, the mindset forms the foundation of the capability, influencing behaviour, which then translates into concrete actions in real-world scenarios.
"Capabilities extend beyond our skills and knowledge. They include our inner drive to take positive action and make decisions that align with our purpose, especially as we navigate complexity. The way we see the world (through our perspectives) and the values we stand for shape our behaviours. Industries and collectives across the world are recognising these life-centric perspectives and values as more important markers of our growth than just transient role- or task-specific skills."
