𝗔 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗘𝗢 Kia ora koutou, Foremost a huge thanks to our 2,800+ amazing members. I’ve visited the majority of branches and have met with hundreds of NZISM members up and down Aotearoa. I’ve been struck by the care that you show for working people, the community in our branches, and the quality of the conversations we’ve had. Health and safety people are great people and I feel privileged every day to work with and for you. Now - before we break for some deserved R&R - is a great time for reflection and thanks for everything that we have achieved this year: 1,146 of our members have taken the important step of becoming accredited. More than three quarters of our accredited members are at Professional or above. Thank you for your commitment to lifting professional standards. I want to thank our 120+ volunteers who run our 14 branches, 5 sector forums, Women in Safety & Health Excellence network, Accreditation, CPD, mentoring, our Board and SLT. You are the heart of our organisation and I’ve learned a huge amount from you. We are lucky to have some truly exceptional people volunteering for NZISM. We also get a lot done. I’ve counted the events for the year on the NZISM website and we’ve delivered 306 events in 2024; almost every day, an NZISM event happened somewhere across the country. Thank you to the presenters and volunteers and attendees who made that happen. Special thanks to those who have been pushing for better through the health and safety reform process. Your voices have been strong and loud and we have a great platform to lobby on and many allies across the system. I suspect that we will see the Minister's thoughts early next year (my sources suggest March or April). I also want to thank our 36 brilliant sponsors. Thank you for sharing our mission to improve health and safety and for your great work. I’ve been lucky to visit many of our sponsors this year and see the great work that you do to improve safety and health in New Zealand. Finally, I want to thank my small but perfectly formed National Office team. I am consistently amazed by the results that you get for our members and the mountains that you move (sometimes armed only with a teaspoon). To everyone in the NZISM family, happy holidays and I wish you safe and relaxing break. Try not to become one of the statistics that ACC quotes around Christmas injuries (ham is a particular risk as it turns out). Ngā mihi 𝗝𝗲𝗳𝗳 Jeff Sissons, NZISM CEO

A big thumbs up to Robert Powell for organising a really interesting visit to the Eastern Busway Alliance site for Auckland Branch members. There was lots to be taken on board with a tour of the Reeves Road Flyover and an explanation of the importance of consistent engagement and communication with local businesses, residents PCBUs and other stakeholders. Thank you to the #easternbuswayalliance H&S Team for hosting Auckland Branch visitors and sharing your knowledge and experiences of this complex project. #nzism #healthandsafetynz

We hope our branch members enjoyed their end of year celebrations with some welcome downtime after a busy year. Finally, it was the turn of National Office to connect with each other in person, and to cement the team spirit which carried us through this busy year and will continue to propel us in 2025. A great day of comradery and fun (and a bit of planning, too)! We hope our members valued their end of year get-togethers as much as we did ours. 😁 Amy, Sara, Jeff, & Tanya 🏌️♀️🏌️♀️🏌️♀️🏌️♀️ ... PRESS RELEASE 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗢𝗳 𝗔𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗘𝗢𝘀 The District Court judgment convicting former Ports of Auckland CEO, Tony Gibson, of failing to comply with his duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 in relation to the death of Pala’amo Kalati carries important lessons that business leaders should note and act upon, says New Zealand Institute of Safety Management Chair, Mike Cosman. NZISM is New Zealand’s leading professional association for health and safety practitioners. NZISM’s 2,800 members represent the entire spectrum of New Zealand businesses and industries. NZISM extends our sympathies to Mr Kalati’s family and loved ones. "This is the first time the CEO of a major company has been convicted under legislation introduced following the Pike River tragedy. While there were a number of unique features of this case, there are also important lessons for other business leaders," says Mr Cosman. "The Court has confirmed that CEOs need to put as much effort into oversight of health and safety as other business activities. "CEOs need to ensure that they have access to demonstrably competent health and safety advice and that actions and plans are both completed in a timely manner and achieve the desired effect. NZISM agrees with Judge Bonnar’s comment that, when hiring health and safety staff, CEOs look for candidates with adequate qualifications and accreditation along with relevant experience. The riskier the workplace, the more important it is to get good advice. "This decision may be seen as raising the bar for business leaders’ responsibility for health and safety, but it is right that the bar should be high. Too many New Zealanders are injured and killed at work. Every worker should return home safely to their families at the end of the day. "We hope the lessons from the death of Mr Kalati and the Court’s decision to hold Mr Gibson accountable for the system failures that contributed to this tragedy will help to improve the practice of health and safety in New Zealand businesses, and save lives in the future," says Mr Cosman. - END - #NZISM #healthandsafetynz Mike Cosman Jeff Sissons Robyn Bennett

Great site tour today for NZISM (NZ Institute of Safety Management) Manawatū members at Nestle in Marton. Producers of the iconic TUX triangle dog biscuits. Their 70th anniversary this year having started in 1954 in Blenheim. We walked through the site from inwards goods to baking the product, packing the product and distribution. Discussions about safety, robotics, cobots, quality and food safety. Thanks to Ghislaine Cousins for the tour and history lesson on the business.
