Trust in the Scottish Government has fallen to the lowest level in history, according to an official measure of social attitudes. Since the creation of the devolved Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government in 1999, the number of people in Scotland saying that living standards have fallen has increased every year. In the latest Scottish Social Attitudes Survey, a large majority (83%) of Scots thought there had been a decline in the general standard of living, compared to only half of all people thinking this in 2019. In every year since 2007, more people have said that the standard of living in Scotland has fallen than have said the opposite. The survey did not ask people if the Scottish Government should be abolished or have its powers reduced. #government #democracy #publicadministration #devolution https://lnkd.in/ez784i4A

The Human Development Index (HDI) combines information on a country’s income per capita, education, and life expectancy into a single index score. Last week the latest HDI country rankings were released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in its 2023/24 Human Development Report. The report reveals that while rich countries have attained record human development, half of the poorest have gone backwards. While the HDI is a well-respected and widely used measure of human development, it has been subject to criticism over the way it is constructed. One critique is the way that the three dimensions (health, education and living standards) are aggregated into the single index which implies a deterioration in one dimension can be compensated for by an improvement in another. A second critique is that the three dimensions are given equal weights (importance). Two recent studies that provide alternatives to these approaches (and whether they make a difference to country rankings) are provided here: https://lnkd.in/g3UZyf2K https://lnkd.in/gzVQzR7z #HumanDevelopmentIndex #SocialIndicatorsResearch #UNDP #HDR2024

The MCC team celebrates and supports the goal of National Reconciliation Week - the goal of a just, equitable, and reconciled Australia. 'Now more than ever,' we must acknowledge and address the disparities faced by Indigenous communities, particularly in the context of health and medical research. Indigenous Australians have unique cultural perspectives and experiences crucial to understanding health and wellness. However, their voices are often underrepresented in medical research. We commit to focusing on inclusion, understanding, and learning in the work we do. #NRW2024 #Reconciliation #IndigenousHealth

The Community Compass Report maps the diversity of Australia's relationship to the community sector. Every person involved in the community sector needs to read this research prepared by 89 Degrees East on behalf of Our Community and the Community Council for Australia. A very brief summary exerpt from the report is included here. A link to the full report is included in the comments. "...the Community Compass offers an overall picture of how Australians think about the community sector and maps the various ways they are (and aren’t) engaging with community organisations. "This research reveals that Australians recognise the importance of the community sector and believe community organisations make a positive difference in the world. There is broad recognition that community organisations fill critical gaps left by government and the private sector and this is reflected in majority support for increased government funding of the sector. "The findings outlined in this report indicate that despite a broader pessimism and varied experiences of engagement with community organisations, the Australian community value the community sector and the important work of community organisations." #takecontrolsolutions #communitysector #boards #directors #ceo #executive

The public’s right to access information underpins meaningful public participation with government in several fundamental ways: • Inclusiveness: Providing relevant community information and involving a diverse range of people and organisations, can ensure that different perspectives are represented. • Deliberation: By accessing information, the public is better equipped to discuss and debate issues, providing a platform for informed and equitable decision-making. • Collaboration: Through the release of information and public consultation, government, communities and members of the public can work together to develop and implement better policies, creating a sense of shared responsibility and ownership. • Empowerment: The more information that is released, the more the public is empowered with the tools and knowledge to meaningfully and effectively participate in how they are governed. During Right to Know Week NSW 2024, the IPC is promoting greater awareness of the right of the public to be told what arrangements exist to enable them to participate in the formulation of an agency’s policies and the exercise of its function https://bit.ly/RTKW2024

“Indeed, GDP has been criticized for not including the value of many of the resources owned by countries, and is biased against countries rich in natural resources. We agree with the authors about the need to move away from such one-size-fits-all approach to measuring national income.” You wonder why Africa is “poor” by western standards and yet rich in resources looted by the same in collaboration with kleptocrat African leaders. Make it make sense. #gdp #sdgs #lmic #globalaid #macroeconomics #africa
