We stand with Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti in upholding the mana of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Tomorrow, the Hīkoi mō Te Tiriti will descend onto Pāremata, marking a stand for Māori sovereignty and the full recognition of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It challenges the ongoing efforts to rewrite history and diminish the Treaty’s intent. We stand in solidarity with the movement to protect Te Tiriti. We mourn the passing of Sir Robert (Bom) Gillies, the last surviving member of the 28th Māori Battalion, who has left us at the age of 99. A true rangatira, known for his incredible humility, initially declined his knighthood twice, feeling unworthy. He later accepted it as a tribute to the Māori Battalion, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of his comrades. Koro Bom served in B Company during World War II after enlisting at just 17, dedicating his life to preserving the Battalion’s legacy and advocating for the recognition of Māori soldiers. A leader who inspired many with his quiet strength and resilience, Koro Bom’s legacy will live on in the hearts of Aotearoa. Moe mai rā, e te rangatira.
