For Angela Jackson, knowing her mum’s wishes made it a lot easier when she passed. Her mother, Marie-Louise, had planned her funeral, chosen all the music and flowers, picked her coffin, and specified the location of her burial. “It was very empowering for Mum, but it was also meaningful for us,” Angela says. Public Trust
Legal Services
New Zealand's most experienced estate management services provider.
About us
We are an autonomous Crown entity and New Zealand’s largest provider of estate planning and management services, helping Kiwis with their important life planning, including writing their wills, putting enduring powers of attorney (EPAs) in place, and administering the estates of their loved ones. We’ve been here since 1873 when we were established as the world’s first public trustee services organisation to protect the estates of some of New Zealand’s most vulnerable people. Since then, we have helped over 2.3 million Kiwis protect their legacies. We are also one of the country’s largest charitable trust administrators and advisers, helping more than 420 charities to set up trusts and distribute funds back to our communities. Our Investments team manages around $1.2bn of funds, primarily for charities, estate beneficiaries and students. Our Corporate Trustee Services supervise New Zealand businesses to help ensure consumer and investor trust in the financial system is maintained. This includes supervision, custody and acting as corporate trustee. Find out more about our own legacy and how we’re helping New Zealanders protect theirs for generations to come here: https://www.publictrust.co.nz/150-years/

Partner and insurance law expert Andrew Horne recently joined Public Trust for a webinar highlighting the importance of cyber resilience following the Crowdstrike outage. Andrew highlighted the implications and impacts of big outages, covering regulatory obligations, financial losses, insurance, contractual and legal issues. #cyberreslience #crowdstrike #helpingshapenewzealandsfuture
We know cyber threats keep many business leaders up at night. So what can we do to mitigate these risks? Our Corporate Trustee Services team hosted a webinar during Cyber Smart Week on cyber resilience and lessons learnt from the recent CrowdStrike outage. "Be comfortable being uncomfortable," recommended Hamish Krebs from CyberCX. Hamish spoke about navigating through a crisis and how to boost resilience. Having a business continuity plan was essential, as was being adaptable and agile, he said. Andrew Horne from MinterEllisonRuddWatts spoke of the implications and impacts of big outages, covering regulatory obligations, financial losses, insurance, contractual and legal issues. Cyber events could bring about a "complex web of losses and claims," he said, so it is important to be prepared. Hamish K. | Andrew Horne | David Callanan

Counting down to the release of JBWere New Zealand's research into bequests in NZ. Our hope is that this new research raises greater awareness about the untapped charitable giving opportunity that exists – and encourages more giving.
JBWere NZ Bequest Report - Pre-release briefings We're almost done with our pre-launch events for the upcoming JBWere NZ Bequest Report! Last week, our roadshow visited five locations, hosting 15 events that shared key insights. The report offers data-driven analysis of the current landscape of bequests and highlights the tremendous opportunity within the flow of family capital in the coming decades. New Zealand is a wealthy country, and the impending transfer across generations presents a unique opportunity to unlock significant capital for pressing social and environmental needs. Like many western economies we are entering the largest transfer of wealth in history, with New Zealand expected to see over NZ$1.5 trillion transferred by 2050. A huge thank you to our author John McLeod for his exceptional research and for presenting at all the events across the motu / country last week. We also appreciate our guest panellists for openly sharing their expertise on bequest programmes and managing gifts-in-wills: Wayne Howett, CEO Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand Audrey Aumua, CEO The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ Leanne Tiscornia, GM Fundraising and Ambulance Membership, Hato Hone St John Glenys Talivai, CEO Public Trust. A special thanks to Public Trust for partnering with us on this project, and for providing a decade of anonymised aggregate data on gifts in wills—deepening our local understanding and enriching the report's insights. We are really proud of this work and hope it has some real impact. Looking forward to further sharing with our clients before the report is publicly launched in 2025. For 182 years, working with charitable and for-purpose clients has been a cornerstone of JBWere’s growth and legacy. Our commitment to philanthropy is reflected in the fact that we've had a dedicated Philanthropic Services team for over 23 years If you want to discuss how we can partner with you, please contact your JBWere Advisory team, or our Head of Philanthropic Services in Aotearoa New Zealand John Morrow | john.morrow@jbwere.co.nz or +64 21 441 087. #jbwere #bequests #philanthropy #givingback #communityimpact #Aotearoa #NewZealand #creatingchange #charities Shamal Dass John McLeod John Morrow Craig Patrick Malcolm Jackson

How do you get maximum cut-through of your adverts and messages in what can be a competitive space, all the while keeping within regulations and looking out for investors’ interests? Advertising financial products, including managed funds and KiwiSaver, brings challenges and it’s a hot topic in the industry. In light of this, Public Trust’s Corporate Trustee Services (CTS) team hosted a webinar on the creativity opportunities to reach investors, and how to navigate the regulations. Marcus McMillan Jaspreet Kaur and Iskandar Onn from the Financial Markets Authority - New Zealand spoke about the guidance and regulations, the subjectivity often involved, and the need to focus on customer outcomes when it comes to incentives. Storytelling was a key ingredient, said Steve Kane Group Managing Director of creative agency Ogilvy NZ. Generating an emotional response was more important than ever when it comes to the advertising of financial products, he said. Hosted by David Callanan, the webinar also outlined Public Trust’s role as supervisor, and Marisa Tucker and Elena Vinton explained the importance of strong governance systems and processes. Thank you to our excellent guest speakers and those who joined us in this valuable industry discussion. #150yearsofPublicTrust #CTS #trusteeservices #kiwisaver #financialplanning #managedfunds #governance #supervisor #custody

Public Trust helps Kiwi from Northland down to Invercargill, and many places in between, big and small. This month, our people have been in Wairoa, a town of about 5,000 people, holding an info session on wills and Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPAs) with Wairoa District Council employees. Pictured is James Weitz, Hastings Principal Trustee, who said it was great to visit the community and help answer questions about estate planning. “It was a good chance for us to make our products and services more accessible to people in a more rural area of New Zealand,” he says. Last year over 28,000 students were protected through Public Trust’s Fee Protect service. This service is the most widely used in New Zealand, with fees held in trust for over 200 training providers. Fee Protect is one of the many ways our team helps support and protect Kiwi at different life stages, including while studying. Chris Moore and Tracy Hayes represented Public Trust at the annual Independent Tertiary Education NZ (ITENZ) conference, with Chris doing a 45-second ‘Turbo Pitch’. “Many of the members of ITENZ are Fee Protect customers of ours, so it is a great event to be able to connect with customers in person, as well as gain further insights into where the education industry is heading and headwinds they are facing,” Chris, Fee Protect Manager, says.
