About us
The Queenstown Lakes District is one of the fastest growing areas in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is a diverse landscape spanning 8,719 km2 and includes Queenstown and Wānaka, and the smaller townships of Makarora, Hāwea, Luggate, Albert Town, Glenorchy, Kinloch, Cardrona, Kingston, and Arrowtown. The Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) provides local government support to the people within these communities. In doing this, the three community goals are always front of mind: vibrant communities, enduring landscapes, and bold leadership. What QLDC looks after: • Community well-being and development – policies, surveys, economic development, working groups. • Environmental health and safety - building control, civil defence, waste minimisation, and environmental health. • Infrastructure - roading and transport, sewerage, water and stormwater. • Recreation and culture – facilities, arts and events funding. • Resource management - land use planning and development control. How QLDC does this: • Following relevant legislation, such as the LGA and RMA. • Engaging with the community early in the process for strategies, plans, and proposals. • Raising funds for the benefit of the community - through rates on property, fees and licenses, investments, loans and grants. • Managing, protecting, and conserving the local environment. • Lobbying Central Government for services and issues relevant to the local community. • Collaborating with social service organisations, Kāi Tahu, ORC, NZTA, and other organisations to address local issues and needs.

Work’s now complete on Stage Five of the Wānaka Lakefront Development Plan and sees the extension of shared pathway Te Ara Wānaka to run alongisde the marina and lakefront, which will help keep people safe when moving through a part of the lakefront that plays host to plenty of vehicles, vessels, and trailers. We’re stoked to welcome the new active travel connection and the latest people-friendly space in Wānaka. Stage Five compliments the access, ecology, and land use improvements we’ve already delivered in previous stages of the project to date. Big thanks to crews from Fulton Hogan for battling through plenty of rain, frosty mornings, and even a very late spring snowfall to have this infrastructure completed in time for summer. The Shotover Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade Project team has set a new regional record for the use of Ecrete. To date, 2247m³ fly ash concrete mix has been used in the build, with a further 120m³ to be poured in the coming months. This is currently the largest amount of low-carbon concrete (or Ecrete) used on a project in Central Otago. The collaboration between supplier Allied Concrete and McConnell Dowell enabled an increase in the fly ash percentage from 30% in design to 35% for construction. Allied Concrete shared: "We are pleased to see the team actively working to reduce the embodied carbon of their project so significantly with the volume of Ecrete they have always used, and what is still yet to come in 2025." Sustainability Advisor Virginia H. was also pleased to see "Queenstown Lakes District Council, Beca, Allied Concrete, and McConnell Dowell, collaborating to prioritise the use of a Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM). The suggested SCM percentage in design (30%) was increased by a further 5% come construction time, this deserves to be celebrated by all involved." "McConnell Dowell is incredibly proud to deliver the new MLE tank with outstanding environmental results. What is equally impressive is the quality of the finish. The team has done a remarkable job, the tank passed its drop test at the first attempt ahead of schedule, an excellent result all round," says Project Manager Joseph Hare.
