It's Fungi Fact Friday! Researchers have shown that mycelial leather may have the capacity to self-repair, meaning that ripped leather could be a thing of the past! Imagine self-healing jackets, shoes, or even car seats - the possibilities could be endless Read more about it here: https://buff.ly/4fPB9JE #fungifactfriday #fungi #fungileather #mycelia #innovation

Inspired by our work with mycelium and fungi over the last three years, Sapro-Tech’s latest creation is a patent pending material that is an industry breakthrough. Using 100% natural materials derived from fungi and plants, Sapro-Tech has created a leather material that rivals animal leather, with incredible growth times and performance. The result: a sustainable, cost effective and competitive leather that is biodegradable and animal-free. Sapro-Tech is already producing samples for our pioneer partners to make prototype products from, like that pictured here made by the very talented Suzie from Velvet Heartbeat #fungi #mycology #fungalleather #fungileather #innovation #biotechnology #mycoleather

It's fungi fact Friday! Have you ever noticed your houseplants bending to grow towards the light? Phototropism is the curvature of the growing part of an organism towards or away from light. For example, plant leaves grow towards light in order to photosynthesis, while roots grow away from light. Some fungi also demonstrate phototropism, with growth and sporulation being cued by light!

Some exciting stuff coming out of the Sapro-Tech x Velvet Heartbeat collaboration 👜🍄🟫 Check it out!
Sometimes we never thought the day would come - when we would have samples! Suzie Eggleton of Velvet Heartbeat one of our Pioneer Partners at Sapro-Tech was busy in her 'office' today, making a few samples from our epically sustainable material that is sort of hush hush. Already at 'parity' with animal based leathers. Sustainable. Low emissions. Cost looks promising. The dreams of the team are becoming real, a nice day in the world of a deep tech startup. I am taking these samples with me to Singapore next week, to be on the wing of Sandhya Sriram, PhD and to close our safe note, so we can keep building. The mission is to make a contribution to changing the impacts of climate change - we are on it! Well done Keith Hudson, Gayani Weeraratne for your leadership, inspiration and mahi alongside our awesome team of Toree Deepanwita Shara van de Pas Grace Drummond Yubing Mao and Erin Stroud - alongside our board chair Iain Hosie and Warren Bebb By the way, the formulation is a secret, I sort of don't know it, that is easier for me to not know the detail, just look at it! Thank you Suzie Eggleton for making our day. Work to be done. Velvet Heartbeat YY Nation taylor SABEN Sprout Agritech

It's fungi fact Friday! New Zealander's have always been world-leaders in the fungi space. Did you know that there was once a booming business in the cultivation and export of wood ear fungus, also know as hakeke, in Puhoi and Taranaki? You can read more about the cool history of New Zealand's fungal background here: https://buff.ly/40laKPc Thanks to https://buff.ly/4fh4zjm for the cool photo!

Have you seen the new Sapro-Tech laboratory extension? To cope with our growth, we have expanded to new horizons (aka the lab space next door!). We are still housed in the Parnell-based Outset Ventures and making the most of our custom space.

Happy Halloween! Fungi come in all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes, sizes, and colours, but Clathrus archeri (the devil's fingers fungus) is definitely on the weirder side. This fungi 'hatches' from a slimy egg, stretching its long, red tentacle-like arms out of the ground. If that wasn't odd enough, the 'arms' of this fungus are coated with a thick, foul smelling goo to attract flies and other pollinators. These fungi are very common in wood chip and garden spaces, so your chance of running into them is higher that you might think (or want)! #fungi #mushroom #mycology #innovation #fungifactfriday
