Final Post of the Year – Reflecting on 2024: Challenges, Growth, and Success: 2024 has been a transformative year, marked by extreme challenges, achievements, and progress both personally and for the Modern Methods of Construction and Automation in Built Environment (MOCABE) group at School of Built Environment - Massey University. On a personal level, this year tested my resilience and reignited my passion for advancing knowledge in the built environment. Mentoring doctoral candidates, fostering international collaborations, and driving innovation have reaffirmed my belief in education and research as catalysts for a sustainable future. For MOCABE, 2024 was pivotal. We embraced #advancedtechnologies, #automation, and #generativeAI in #construction, achieving breakthroughs in #offsiteconstruction research. Our team celebrated significant milestones, including PhD completions, impactful publications, and new partnerships with industry and academia. As 2025 approaches, I am filled with optimism. With a shared commitment to innovation and excellence, the possibilities are endless for MOCABE and our academic community. Heartfelt Thanks: To colleagues, students, and collaborators—thank you for your support and shared passion for progress. To my family, especially my wife Sanaz Rezaeefard, thank you for your unwavering love and encouragement through this extremely challenging year. Here’s to a prosperous and inspiring 2025! Pepper the bird-napped cockatoo has taken the title of ‘Winner’ in this year’s Quote of the Year competition, after her signature words helped identify her at Porirua Police Station upon rescue. Earlier this year she was stolen from Staglands Wildlife Reserve and Cafe in Upper Hutt. Police got her back but could only confirm she was the same cockatoo when she chirped “Hello Darling” excitedly when Staglands staff came to fetch her. Staglands General Manager Sarah Purdy is so pleased with the win that she has promised to share her muesli with Pepper again, as the bird enjoyed it so much the night she was brought home from the Porirua Police Station. It’s also been revealed that Pepper is going to get muesli again on Christmas morning at Sarah’s home. This is the first time in the 14 years of the competition that a bird – in fact, a non-human – has won the popular vote. This year a majority of the other top quotes were from central government politicians or world-class Kiwi sports stars. Dozens of nominations are received, and the top ten go out for public voting. This year, more than 7,000 votes were received. In second place was Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s retort to a radio interview, “Let me be clear: I’m wealthy, I’m – you know – sorted.” You can read more about what makes a good competition entry in Dr Heather Kavan’s new book on Kiwi quotes, They Said What?! She wrote that Kiwis like the quote more if the person is spontaneous and even stumbles. “The world wants our humanity more than our eloquence".
