We've unveiled a $3.6 million upgrade to our Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) lab and it's pretty amazing. The upgrade enhances our capacity to support New Zealand’s broader innovative research requirements and includes advanced new instruments that will allow our scientists to delve deeper into the nanostructure of trees and chemicals. Scion's fermentation, microplastics analytical chemistry and other knowledge and capabilities were on display last week when we hosted more than 50 delegates from the Fonterra National Environmental Managers conference. After a welcome by Bioproducts and packaging portfolio leader Alec Foster, delegates heard from our experts on five topics. 🥼 Suren Wijeyekoon showed them the Biohazards lab talking about Scion's role in New Zealand's first commercial scale anaerobic digestion bioenergy plant. 🥼Jamie Bridson talked about Scion's knowledge of microplastics. 🥼Ilena Isak spoke about Scion's analytical chemistry capabilities. We have a range of techniques we can use to analyse compounds. 🥼Carla Cronje showed delegates our organic chemistry lab where we've developed knowledge in a process called hydrothermal oxidation. 🥼Alyesha Candy, Christophe Collet and Michelle Rich showed Scion's fermentation lab where we can use bacteria and yeast to convert industrial waste streams into high-value products. Scion is a leading expert in many of these areas and commercial entities can access our expertise. Our elf Ray Diata has sprinkled some holiday magic into our nursery on a mission to find a Christmas tree! 🎄  Our 10-hectare research nursery has shade houses, controlled climate propagation facilities and more to support sustainable forestry using modern nursery practices and facilities.  On the edge of Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Forest, it supplies a range of #indigenous and #exotic species for #research and pilot trials both internally and commercially. Ray was spotted helping the team box up some seedlings to send out to one of our clients.  Ray’s really in his element among these pine trees.  #ElfOnTheShelf #nursery #environmental #forestry

Here comes trouble. 🎄Meet our new team member Ray Diata🎅 The #ElfOnTheShelf  is joining Scion this month to find out about the impacts Scion is enabling for New Zealand. Whether that’s exploring our #nursery and national collections, or our #innovations and #technologies.  Ray slid into Te Whare nui o Tuteata. The building’s name was gifted to Scion by Ngāti Hurungaterangi, Ngāti Taeotu and Ngāti Te Kahu (Ngā Hapū e Toru) to acknowledge their ancestor Tuteata, and the connection to the land. Scion and the hapū are building a strong partnership together. Te Whare Nui o Tuteata is Scion’s front door. It’s at the heart of Te Papa Tipu Innovation Park - 114 hectares containing more than 40 tenants. Stay tuned for Ray’s adventures.

Catch up on November's news at Scion. 🧪 Marsden Funding will help Song Bing explore fundamental research opening doors to value from waste. 🌲 This living collection of exotic species represents New Zealand’s forestry history. 🛰️ We're researching using traditional knowledge and contemporary science to understand fire-prone landscapes. 🪵 This cabin isn't a collection of disparate timbers, it's a showcase of what can be done with alternative timbers and without using chemicals. 🏫 The ability to foresee a need for change a decade in advance spurred the inception of Green School New Zealand. #listen Scion research has shown how predator control by Rotorua Canopy Tours has proven beneficial to beetle populations. Entomologist Carl Wardhaugh joined Canopy Tours general manager Paul Button in speaking to RNZ. He talked about Scion's beetle diversity studies showing Okohiriki (Dansey Reserve) had almost twice the abundance of native beetles compared with nearby native forest sites that did not have trapping or pest control programmes. https://lnkd.in/gCQjYeqn #conservation #beetles #entomology #pestcontrol #sustainability #research

Congratulations to Dr Jamie Bridson who was awarded the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry JEOL Brian Halton Award. The award is given to the lead author of an outstanding paper in the field of chemistry. Jamie’s manuscript was titled Impact of accelerated weathering on the leaching kinetics of stabiliser additives from microplastics. It was published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials during his PhD studies at Scion and the University of Canterbury. The research explored how environmental factors affected the release of hazardous chemicals from microplastics.   He found leaching depended on the plastic formulation reflecting the complex relationship between polymer, additive, and environmental conditions. These insights are crucial for advancing microplastic risk assessment and mitigation strategies, guiding the development of policies and practices to minimise environmental and health risks from plastics.
