It's thanks to the dedication of fisheries observers like Saiasi Sarau, who oversees the deep sea-fishing activities of trawler FV Will Watch (owned and operated by a subsidiary of Sealord) in the Southern Indian Ocean, that sustainable fishing practices are monitored around the world. This vital job involves spending months at sea, recording catch and bycatch and collecting biological data of the fish caught - information that helps us know the status of fish stocks. Saiasi is employed by the Cook Islands Ministry of Marine Resources and like other observers, his income is cost recovered from fishing companies like Sealord. The work to upskill fisheries observers is funded through the Deepsea Fisheries project of the FAO (Food & Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations). At Sealord, we are committed to responsible fisheries management and work closely with the FAO Common Oceans team to ensure the sustainability of global deepsea fisheries. Great to see Anthony Albanese the Prime Minister of Australia at our site in Devonport. It means a lot to our people at Petuna Aquaculture to have his support in what has need an incredibly stressful time prior to the PMs recent announcement. Tasmanian trout and salman is the best in the world. #employment #sustainablesalmon #collaboration
Our Labor Government will always stand up for Australian workers. We back the salmon industry and the communities it supports like the one here in Devonport. Anne Urquhart has fought hard for this win. She’ll make a formidable member for Braddon. We know that it's not a choice between supporting good jobs or doing the right thing by the environment – Tasmania does both, Australia does both. All around the world, when people see 'Tasmanian salmon' they know it means the best quality and the highest standards of sustainability.

It was pleasing to see some of the proposed reforms in yesterday’s announcement on public consultation to changes to the Fisheries Act. As technology, innovation and the way we fish has changed and improved, it’s vital that the regulations are fit for purpose. Fisheries legislation is technical, complex and somewhat boring to the uninitiated - it can't easily be distilled. If you're interested in getting past the headlines, check out the document here: https://lnkd.in/gQa4gtRB While we welcome the proposed changes, we're yet to look at the proposal in full. The devil is often in the detail. Here is our initial overarching response: https://lnkd.in/gWqSyHjp

For many of our whānau, fishing is a way of life. And that’s certainly the case for Sealord skipper Jesse Crasborn. When he’s not working at sea, he’s back out on the water fishing recreationally in Tasman Bay and the outer Marlborough Sounds. Jesse's latest achievement in the world of recreational fishing is scooping the top prize in The Export Fishing Competition for the fourth year in a row. We applaud Jesse for this incredible fishing feat and for leading by example when it comes to taking care of our precious ocean resource, a passion he shares with all of us here at Sealord. The Press covers Jesse's story here: https://lnkd.in/g-NnNhKQ #Sealord #sustainablefishing

Investing in the future of our communities is important to us at Sealord. Our Sealord scholarship programme, open to children or grandchildren of Sealord employees, embodies this value. These scholarships, valued at $5,000 annually for up to four years, recognise not only academic excellence but also excellence in extra-curricular activities and leadership. This year, we were thrilled to award the scholarships to three exceptional young women from Nelson - Penelope Taulafo, Veronica Gauler and Isla McTague. Penelope Taulafo is studying law at Victoria University, becoming the first in her family to attend university. A talented hockey and rugby player, she aspires to be a Family Court lawyer, advocating for children and supporting Māori and Pasifika communities. Her family has worked at Sealord for three generations. The Press does a great write up about all three winners here: https://lnkd.in/gHzcnsB4 Since launching our scholarship programme in 2010, we’ve proudly invested $210,000 in young leaders like Penelope, Veronica, and Isla. Wishing these talented young women all the best as they embark on their next adventures. #Sealord

Our CEO Doug Paulin is the cover star in this month's Seafood New Zealand magazine, reflecting on his fondest summer memories, taking a look back on the year that was, and sharing his favourite kaimoana recipe (BBQ deepwater orange roughy of course). Being half Japanese-owned through Nissui, we have strong ties with the fish-loving nation of Japan, so we thoroughly enjoyed the chance to connect last week with Ambassador of Japan to New Zealand, Makoto OSAWA. A Sealord factory tour and lunch with our CEO Doug Paulin was built into his busy schedule during his trip to Nelson. It was great to discuss Sealord's work and the wider New Zealand fishing industry with the Ambassador while he was here. Next time he's keen to get even closer to the action by jumping on board our fishing trawler FV Thomas Harrison for a night on the Cook Strait. #sealord

Congratulations to our Moana New Zealand whānau! Two decades of incredible work caring for the taonga that comes from our inshore fisheries as Aotearoa's largest iwi-owned fishing company.
This month, we celebrated our 20 years as a whānau at Moana New Zealand. We acknowledge all our kaimahi, from those who have moved on to all of us here today and our future generations to come. We have a huge responsibility in caring for the taonga we’ve been entrusted with through the Fisheries Settlement on behalf of all Iwi. We’re incredibly proud, particularly of all our achievements over recent years. Thank you for being part of our journey! #MoanaNewZealand #Whakapapa

It's #WorldFisheriesDay! Today is a special reminder of the importance of our oceans, the communities that depend on them, and the responsibility we all share in preserving marine resources for future generations. Our sector will play an increasingly important role in providing food and nutrition in the future, so keeping our oceans healthy to sustain fisheries is crucial. As New Zealand’s largest seafood company, looking for better ways to do things is important to us, and #WorldFisheriesDay is a great reminder of why our sustainability journey is so important. It has been a real privilege to partner with the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter and work together to practice winch rescues from a Sealord trawler off the Otago Coast. Helicopter rescues from vessels at sea can be complex and highly technical, often taking place in bad weather with seriously ill patients. We know the stakes are high in these scenarios, and the more real-life practice that rescue crews can get, the safer everyone will be... It was eye-opening for all involved and our hats go off to the brave Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust crew who are doing such incredible, life-saving work. The Otago Daily Times covered the story here: https://lnkd.in/g6ma3E-Q #sealord #saferseas
