  • Thank you Dieline for sharing our recent project for Pacific Coast Spirits. A design brief inspired by the vibrancy of old-world rum brands, sailors, and treasure, the design for Pacific Coast’s “X Marks the Spot” is a homage to Mangawhai’s rich seafaring history. This port town, renowned for its boat-building prowess in the 1800s, also boasts a notorious, treacherous harbour that has seen its fair share of tragic shipwrecks. Each spirit within the range is named after a local landmark navigation point such as Howling Wolf Rock, Sentinel Rock, Mokohinau Islands and at the centre of the brand roundel is Taranga (Hen) Island, the largest island within the Hen & Chickens a renowned fishing and diving spot for locals. The neck label on the gins features the Niagara, a passenger ship that was struck by mines off the coast of Mangawhai in 1940. All 349 passengers and crew survived, but the cargo, including 590 gold bars en route from the British government to pay America for munitions, disappeared in 120m of water. The rum labels feature the Daring a 17-metre (55'8") schooner, launched on 1 September 1863 in Mangawhai, New Zealand. It was wrecked twice, once in 1864, and again in 1865. Daring's wreck was then discovered and excavated in December 2018 after being exposed by shifting sands. The Pacific Coast brand combines this heritage with a modern, sophisticated execution designed to evoke a sense of adventure and discovery, while delivering a premium, expertly crafted spirit experience.

Inspired by the visual language of all things rum brands, in addition to pirates and their endless quest for booty, SingleDouble Design’s creation for Pacific Coast Spirits combines Mangawhai’s rich maritime history with a touch of sophistication. I’m incredibly proud to announce that my work for 30 Knots has been awarded the coveted Best of Category (Beverage) Trophy at the 2024 Dieline Awards. Now in its 14th year, the Dieline Awards is the premier global packaging design competition, showcasing exceptional creatives and agencies that shape the packaging design industry. This year, the awards received more than 1,500 entries from over 35 countries. I'm blown away by this result! Designing the ‘under-designed’ is incredibly challenging, many many a late night was spent crafting every inch of this pack. Although I’m an independent designer, all of my projects come together via a much loved network of creative pals. It takes a village to bring projects to life, so much appreciation goes to Zendoke for their beautiful structural work, Tim Gilroy for his always on point production skills (and being my daily sounding board and voice of reason) and Trudy Hunt for her insanely creative brain and kiwi humour. Finally, thank you to the Dieline team who work tirelessly to create such a great platform for our industry, the judges from around the globe, the wonderful 30 Knots team and all my clients who trust me with such special projects. https://lnkd.in/gf7w_w58 Credits: Renders by the always clever Tricycle Studio. New work for Fen & Field Distillery. Fen & Field Distillery is located at the foot of Mt Kapapuku and the land surrounding it was once a marshland teeming with eels that sustained the Maori tribes living in the area (the fen). The distillery is set amongst beautiful Waikato farmland, with circling hawks and hedgerows full of hares and pheasants, a place that was known as the grain basket of New Zealand. People don't remember what you tell them, they remember how you made them feel.    In bottle design terms, that may mean creating interactive experiences that resonate with your customers.    The best way to do this? Interactivity through QR codes, NFC and other links to the digital world. Or what's often overlooked is more traditional, sensory interactivity - like visual puzzles or, in the case of Two Doctors Whiskey, a hidden formula.   Two Doctors' design story proves that taking a step into the largest spirit categories requires more than just a standout presence on the shelf. It demands the creation of a distinctive and memorable moment for your customer. Combining contrasting print and extensive embossing techniques, the Two Doctors Marque™ label embodies the unique story behind the handmade craft whiskey creating a unique bottle design – exactly what the doctor ordered. We loved working with SingleDouble on this and will always be one of our favourites! Shout out to the very talented Trudy Hunt and team 🙏🏽
