Well done to the SH25A Taparahi Slip Remediation project team, which was awarded special recognition from the judges at the 2024 SCNZ Excellence in Steel Awards. Judges were impressed with how this multigirder steel composite bridge solution rapidly and effectively reconnected storm-isolated Coromandel communities. Remarkably, SH25A’s new Taparahi Bridge opened less than 12 months after the slip occurred, thanks to an incredibly collaborative design-and-build approach and the team’s collective determination to deliver. Congratulations on this exciting business milestone Asmuss and well said Dean Brown!
New episode: Inside a steel super centre 👇 A 100-year-old fifth-generation family business just opened this 1500 square-metre steel warehouse - large enough to store twice the amount of steel used to build the Auckland harbour bridge. Asmuss imports steel from mills around the world including China, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea and Australia, making it one of New Zealand's most globally connected operators. Its products have been behind major projects in our history, including the Marsden Point former oil refinery, the Huntly Power Station and Wellington's caketin. But we're currently in a construction downturn - so why has this $42 million site been built, and stockpiled with steel beams and pipes? "There’s just so much infrastructure investment required in New Zealand." Asmuss CEO Dean Brown told me. "We want to be ready." Well done to the Naenae Pool project team, which was awarded special recognition from the judges at the 2024 SCNZ Excellence in Steel Awards. This project demonstrates how steel and timber can be effectively combined, leveraging the strengths of each material to reduce the carbon footprint of construction. Well done to the Hinuera Sheds project team, which was awarded special recognition from the judges at the 2024 SCNZ Excellence in Steel Awards. The design of these sheds includes the integration of 200 tonnes of recycled Steltech beams sourced from a carefully demolished Port of Tauranga building. It’s a great example of steel’s end-of-life story and demonstrates how steel can be fully reused with minimal rework. The judges were impressed with how the team cleverly worked out how the old beams would be used in the new build. Well done to the Marian College project team, which was awarded special recognition from the judges at the 2024 SCNZ Excellence in Steel Awards. This repurposing project is a remarkable transformation of an old single-storey warehouse into a resilient, two-storey classroom structure with upgraded amenities. The team took on the challenge of understanding the existing building, strengthening it from IL2 to IL3 and reimagining it for a higher level of use – all while avoiding waste and maximising reuse. The judges were impressed with the skill shown in turning a basic structure into something far more robust and versatile. Well done to the Lambton House Diaphragm Retrofit project team, which won the Earthquake Strengthening category at the 2024 SCNZ Excellence in Steel Awards. Strengthening was completed on the main structure of Lambton House in 2012 to achieve a rating of 80 percent of the New Building Standard. Unfortunately, the work did not address the prestressed floor units’ seating or the level-four diaphragm transfer. The solution was to install circular hollow section members, connected to the exterior and interior reinforced concrete beams, and to the underside of the precast system slab. The innovative use of new technology achieved a high degree of accuracy for the fabricated structure and the exposed steel is a feature of the level-four car park ceiling. Congratulations to the Spiral Staircase project team, which won the Under $500k category at the 2024 SCNZ Excellence in Steel Awards. The spiral steel staircase is a focal point for Made Market, Hamilton’s newest urban precinct near the Waikato River. A key feature of the sculptural staircase is the balustrade, which supports the stair treads. The soffit beneath the treads forms steel ‘petals’, creating a segmented, curved and smooth surface. The central column of the stairway serves as the primary structural support, for both the stairway and the deck above. This allowed the use of lighter steel materials in the stairway and façade, ensuring more efficient resource use while preserving the strength and stability of the assembly. Anna Millar is the proud winner of the 2024 Steel Design Award, which comes with $3,000 of prize money and a certificate. This Award was open to all 74 students taking the 700 level course, Strcteng 710 Low Rise Structures, and was awarded to the student who scored the highest overall mark in the steel module at the The University of Auckland. This involved two quizzes, a steel portal frame project and the exam. This year was a very close contest, with less than one mark separating the top three students. SCNZ General Manager Darren O'Riley was delighted to present Anna with her award at the CESA Leavers’ Dinner. Congratulations Anna! #steelconstruction #structuralsteel #steelawards

Congratulations to the Touchdown Sculpture project team, which won the $500k to $1.5m category at the 2024 SCNZ Excellence in Steel Awards. Stunning in its elegance, simplicity and complexity, ‘Touchdown’ is a large-scale ‘feather’ sculpture constructed from structural steel with a 4m-long fibreglass quill tip. It weighs 22 tonnes, and measures 21m long, 11m wide and 17m high. Located on a remote hilltop site, it sits lightly on the ground with just one cantilevered support point. Challenges included the site’s high wind and seismic loads, the requirement to fabricate the feather with no visible connections, and design intricacies such as the main quill section tapering in two directions as it curves along a constant arc.
