🚨 Exciting Update from Timber Unlimited 🚨 One of our high-priority projects was the development and provision of up-to-date fire engineering design and construction guidance for mass timber and timber hybrid buildings in accordance with the NZ Building Code. Carried out by a highly experienced group of authors with diverse expertise across the building and construction sector, this initiative aimed to remove uncertainty and clarify the design and consenting process for timber buildings across New Zealand. Our interim output in 2023 was the publication of the “Mass Timber Guidance Document—Recommended Supplement to C/AS2 and C/VM2”, which can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gNSBZJJF Now, we're thrilled to announce the release of the final output from this project. The document "Fire Safety in Multi-storey Mass Timber Structures - New Zealand Commentary to the Global Design Guide" is now available for download as a draft for public comment via our website: https://lnkd.in/gBNru4ww It’s important to note that this NZ Commentary is designed to complement the "Fire Safe Use of Wood – Global Design Guide", which can be accessed here: https://lnkd.in/eB8UtFqw To everyone who generously volunteered their time to this project, including the authors, co-authors, colleagues, stakeholders, and the organisations that made significant in-kind contributions, your efforts have been instrumental in making this important project happen. We sincerely thank you.

  • ⚠ NEW TECH NOTE ALERT ⏩ ⏩ ⏩ Basic density, oven-dry density, nominal density, test density, characteristic density; what do they all mean and which should I use? The latest Technical Note from Timber Design Society and Timber Unlimited is here to help you answer these questions. Download it here: https://lnkd.in/g9UZB2qf   Timber is a hygroscopic material which means it takes on and releases moisture in response to changes in the atmospheric and environmental conditions that it's in. Consequently, the mass (and volume) of a given piece of timber can change depending on its moisture content at any given time.    Additionally, there are various Standards for measuring and reporting timber density. It is, therefore, critically important that you use the correct density for the design or specification task you may have in hand. This new Tech Note demystifies the density terminology and associated Standards and provides guidance on what density you should use for specific purposes. Don't forget, we also have two other tech notes available for you, for free - check them out here: https://lnkd.in/da2TvgRx   As always, your feedback via the Timber Unlimited website is welcome.
