  • We’re passionate about building a better, more sustainable future – starting with our own spaces. Our Pōneke Wellington office fit-out has been awarded a 6 Green Star – Interiors NZ V1.10 Certified Built Rating from the NZGBC. This prestigious rating signifies ‘world leadership’ in sustainable office design and reflects our commitment to creating and sustaining a better world. Our Victoria Street building was evaluated on management, indoor environment quality, energy, water, materials, transport, emissions, acoustics and innovation. Hannah Kelly, Environmental Consultant, says the 6 Green Star certification recognises our commitment to continually improving and the great work the team has done to create a healthy workspace for our people. “The rating considered how we reused furniture, engaged with our people, provided great amenities and spaces and used ECA-licensed carpet and paints. It also recognises our negotiations to install EV charging points so we can upgrade our fleet to EVs. This demonstrates to our Pōneke clients that we are committed to our sustainability journey to design, build, fit-out and relocate our people, embedding sustainability in everything we do.” Thank you to our Green Star Accredited Professional Patrick Stone at TM Consultants Ltd, the designers and project managers at Unispace, and our technical experts at Tonkin + Taylor contributed to waste management, acoustics, health and safety, and sustainable procurement strategies. #sustainability #greenstar #greenbuildings #officefitout Helen Croad, Hugh Cherrill

  • A Tale of Skink Relocation and Habitat Rehabilitation Our Tonkin + Taylor ecologists have been undertaking important work, relocating skinks from Mount Messenger and Tāhunanui Back Beach project sites to their safe and humble new abodes. In Taranaki, our team and local iwi celebrated the translocation of three striped skinks to predator-free Rotokare sanctuary. Striped skinks aren’t often seen in the wild, and the team was proud to be part of the journey to return this taonga home. Meanwhile, our Nelson team successfully relocated 88 Northern Grass Skinks to a nearby site to support Nelson City Council's work to remove contaminated sawdust from Tāhunanui back beach. • Roll up your sleeves and put on your hard hats – November is Safe Digging Month in New Zealand, an initiative from beforeUdig. It’s all about raising awareness and educating those digging up the ground on the steps to work safely and avoid damaging utility cables and pipes at a work site. Breaking ground is one of our critical risks, and we spoke to some of our people about our internal Breaking Ground Procedure (BGP) and how it keeps them safe. Goldie B., Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor, says the BGP helps us consider far more than just getting home safe. “It’s a holistic approach to ensure we respect everything around us from protected trees to recognised archaeological sites, to checking local volcanic risk and to the invisible hazards like underground and overhead services. Because all these items are often ‘out of sight’, they’re also commonly ‘out of mind’. The BGP is a useful tool to remind us of the unseen before we accidentally discover them.” Scott Thomas, Geotechnical Consultant, says the BGP is a thorough document that provides a high level of protection for our people, assets, and equipment - and we should be proud of it! “It protects and assists us in delivering well for our people, clients, and asset providers. We are taking a duty of care, and a holistic approach to the hazard,” Scott says. It may be Safe Digging Month, but we want to spread awareness daily, one shovel at a time. Check out some resources to keep you safe: www.beforeUdig.co.nz

  • We were pleased to be a major sponsor of the 5th International Conference on Transportation Geotechnics (ICTG) held in Sydney this week. The conference brought together academics and engineering professionals from around the world, encouraging valuable discussions in transportation geotechnics. Several of our geotechnical engineers from across New Zealand and Australia attended, engaging with the latest advancements and innovative solutions in the field. Razel Ramilo, Technical Director, shared her experience: “The conference was a great mix of insightful lectures and innovative ideas. The keynote lectures, especially the heritage lecture by Prof. Buddhima Indraratna, AM, FTSE on the fluidisation of soft soil during cyclic loading, were absolutely captivating.” Razel presented her paper, “Peka Peka to Otaki Expressway: Design and Performance of the Embankment Construction on Soft Soil,” detailing the project's technical aspects, challenges, and solutions. Conference highlights included presentations on underground tunnelling, geotechnical asset maintenance, pavement stabilisation with geosynthetics, and the impacts of climate change on transportation infrastructure. Sessions on ground improvement and digital engineering in large projects demonstrated the industry's forward momentum. Discussions on UAVs for bridge condition monitoring and offshore wind farm projects were particularly exciting, showcasing the integration of advanced technologies in geotechnics. Tonkin + Taylor remains committed to driving innovation and excellence in transportation geotechnics.
