#NewPaper I'm thrilled to announce the publication of our new review paper in Automation in Construction! This paper explores the role of automation technologies in the manufacturing and assembly stages of industrialised construction (IC), with a focus on how these technologies improve interoperability, quality assurance, manufacturability, constructability, and more. Our research explores the following key questions: (1) What are the state-of-the-art automation technologies in the manufacturing and assembly stages of IC? (2) What benefits of IC are enhanced by the implementation of these automation technologies? (3) What are the limitations of current automation in manufacturing and assembly and future research directions? This work is a significant part of my Ph.D. studies and has been conducted under the expert guidance of my three supervisors, Yang Zou, Yuqian Lu, and Alice Chang-Richards, to whom I am very grateful. I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Troy Coyle (Wahine/She/Her), Robert Amor, and Fleur Palmer for their invaluable support and contributions to this research. This article's rangahau (research) was enabled by funding from Te Hīkina Whakatutuki - The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) of Aotearoa New Zealand within the framework of an Endeavour Research Programme managed by HERA (Heavy Engineering Research Association). Māori references use the Waikato-Tainui meta (dialect) to acknowledge HERA being located in the rohe of Manukau, Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). The use of te reo Māori (the Māori language) is intentional as part of the programme's commitment to Vision Mātauranga. We’ve really enjoyed the recap of the last podcast episode that HERA released, featuring our Monitoring 4.0 research theme lead, Kaveh Andisheh,. This highlight dives into how real-world monitoring, like the case study of a five-story office building in Christchurch, bridges the gap between engineering models and reality. Such an exciting example of Monitoring 4.0 in action and the insights it brings to future-proofing our construction sector! A definite must listen!
𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟰.𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 🏢 What happens when Monitoring 4.0 meets a real-world project? Check out the last Stirring the Pot podcast episode from 2024 that we are recapping where Kaveh Andisheh, shared an exciting case study: the monitoring of a five-story office building in Christchurch. With sensors that detect even the smallest vibrations – like footsteps inside the building – the monitoring process took less than a week. The data collected revealed critical information about the building’s natural period, mode shapes, and elastic stiffness, providing a unique comparison to engineering models. 💡 The verdict? The design was safe, if slightly conservative, but this experience showcased the power of Monitoring 4.0 in bridging the gap between models and reality. 🎧 Ready to learn more?
