Oamaru, New Zealand | The White Stone Town

Oamaru is a town on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. In the mid-to-late 19th century, a large number of European immigrants came to Oamaru, developing agriculture and animal husbandry, which led to the prosperity of this small town, gradually becoming the main port city of that time. Oamaru is rich in white limestone, and most of the buildings from its early prosperous period were constructed with local white stone. The town has many well-preserved New Zealand historical buildings, most of which are concentrated in the Oamaru Historic District, that is, on Harbour Street. Harbour Street and Tyne Street are where the Oamaru Victorian architecture cluster is located. These ancient buildings were all built between the 1860s and 1880s, and they also represent New Zealand's most complete Victorian-era commercial architectural streets. All the buildings on Harbour Street are made of limestone from Oamaru itself.
