Don't miss this hidden gem of a museum in the Three Gorges area.
In Fengjie, aside from the Three Gorges Peak and Baidi City, Kuizhou Ancient City is also worth a visit, and the most important part of the ancient city is the Kuizhou Museum. I usually don't visit county-level museums, but the Kuizhou Museum exceeded my expectations, and there were almost no other visitors.

🎫Tickets
Free, no reservation required, just register manually upon arrival.
🕰️Opening hours
Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, closed on Mondays. I visited in the morning after visiting Baidi City, before the 1:30 pm ferry from Fengjie to Wushan arrived, so I was a bit rushed. Fortunately, the Baotaping Wharf next to Kuizhou Ancient City is convenient for boarding the ferry.
🏷️Exhibits
The museum is small, mainly centered around the theme of "Kuimen, the World's Mightiest," focusing on a comprehensive exhibition of Fengjie's history, showcasing the natural and cultural landscape, wartime poetry, and more through treasured artifacts and exhibits.
🔮Museum highlights
✅Lock River Iron Pillar: There is a replica of this pillar by the river in the Baidi City Scenic Area. The museum has the original, made in the Southern Song Dynasty, said to block Kuimen and prevent the Mongol army from advancing down the river. As always, artifacts removed from their original environment always seem to lose something.
🏺Other exhibits
The bronze and pottery artifacts at Kuizhou Museum are also worth seeing. Here are a few that left a deep impression:
✅Green Jade Kui Dragon Ornament: This is the most famous artifact from Fengjie. The jade ornament's pattern is not very complex, but the carving is clear, orderly, and smooth, with a great sense of beauty.
✅Warring States Bronze Ding: The largest Chu-style bronze ding discovered in the Three Gorges area to date, with three sheep on it, clear and delicate patterns, and vivid details, making it a highlight.
✅Wooden Carving of the Three Stars of Fortune, Prosperity, and Longevity: Although not very old, it has a rare and eerie quality, with a sense of both good and evil.

In addition, the Han Dynasty pottery figurines and Song Dynasty tri-colored glazed pottery in the museum are also interesting, with each one smiling and looking very cute. Finally, I was personally touched by the old photos of Fengjie in the exhibition hall. Thinking back to my last visit here during the Three Gorges Farewell Tour, I couldn't help but marvel at the tremendous changes in the Three Gorges over the years. It's worth taking your time to see.

Chongqing Fengjie | The Content-Rich Kuizhou Museum
| The Content-Rich Kuizhou Museum. Chongqing Fengjie, formerly known as Kuizhou, is where Li Bai wrote the famous lines, 'The monkeys on both banks keep crying, while my boat has passed thousands of mountains.' To understand Fengjie's culture, you must visit the Kuizhou Museum.
🌈Highlights:
The park features the original site-protected Yaokui Tower; the relocated and reconstructed Yidou Gate, Kaiji Gate, and Kuizhou City Wall; Yong'an Palace, Bao Chao Stone Chamber, Guanyin Cave; and the newly built Bao Mansion.
The museum itself is not large, but it is rich in collections. It is said to house more than 20,000 items, showcasing Fengjie's historical evolution and achievements from multiple angles. The museum's theme is 'Kuimen, the Most Majestic in the World,' with three exhibition halls: one for the Three Kingdoms culture, one for poetry culture, and one for river and gorge culture.
The Three Kingdoms culture is represented by the scene of Liu Bei entrusting his son at Baidi City. The original site of the entrustment hall was in the Baidi City Scenic Area, but it was relocated to the Kuizhou Museum when it opened in 2017. The exhibition hall features over 20 colorful sculptures of Shu Kingdom officials, each over 2 meters tall, vividly recreating the poignant history of Liu Bei entrusting his son at Yong'an Palace over 1,700 years ago.
As Fengjie is known as the City of Poetry in China, the poetry culture is also profound. The museum dedicates a significant portion to showcasing the charm of poetry, using light and shadow technology to project many timeless verses onto the statue of Du Fu, creating a sense of temporal dislocation.

The light boat has passed through countless mountains
Ancient Shu had four wonders, known as 'Kuimen the most majestic, Jianmen the most perilous, Emei the most beautiful, and Qingcheng the most secluded'.
1️⃣ Baidicheng
Recommendation rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Suggested visiting time: More than 1 day
Ticket: 🎫100 yuan
Location: 📌 Baidicheng Scenic Area on the north bank of the Yangtze River at the mouth of Qutang Gorge
Baidicheng has thousands of steps, two-thirds of which are submerged underwater, with only three hundred steps remaining.
At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, this city was built. Because a well in the city often emitted white vapors, resembling a white dragon, it was given its current name.
💥 Baidicheng is well-known for the story of Liu Bei entrusting his son to others, a must-visit for fans of the Three Kingdoms. Baidicheng is well-preserved, and besides the statues of Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, and others, there are also many precious inscriptions and steles from literati of various dynasties.

2️⃣ Kuizhou Museum
Recommendation rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Visiting time: 2-3 hours
A national second-level museum, 4A tourist attraction. In addition to Tang tri-colored ceramic figures and Ming and Qing Buddha statues unearthed locally, the exhibition hall uses a large number of photos to recreate the old Fengjie city (the old city of Fengjie permanently disappeared due to the rising waters of the Three Gorges Dam), covering a time span from the late Qing Dynasty to the beginning of this century. Precious photos of the first person from Chongqing Nankai Wharf, Li Delue, and his wife (who also often traveled to Fengjie by boat on the Yangtze River) are also on display here.

3⃣️ Kuimen Chijialou (Watching the river and teasing monkeys 🐒)
Recommendation rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Visiting time: 1 hour
⚠️Highly recommended⚠️ You'll regret it if you don't go! A ten yuan RMB photo spot, an immersive experience of Li Bai's 'Early Departure from Baidicheng' with 'the endless cries of monkeys on both banks'. Many notes indicate that the best position to view Qutang Gorge is from Baidicheng (which I disagree with ❌, because you can't see the front of Kuimen from the top of Baidicheng and can't feel the majesty of Kuimen). The best angle should be from Chijialou at the mouth of the gorge. Chijialou has a large number of wild macaques 🐒 (there were about 20 when I visited), and most of them are very civilized and friendly. There is also feed for sale at 5 yuan 💰 per pack. You can enjoy teasing the monkeys and admiring the river without delay.
-
4⃣️ Summit of the Three Gorges
Recommendation rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Visiting time: 4 hours
The best position to overlook Qutang Gorge. Friends who do not drive need to take a shuttle bus from Fengjie High-speed Railway Station to get there (9:00-9:30-10:00), and the return trip also requires a shuttle bus. Suitable for friends who like to climb high and look far, ⚠️those with acrophobia⚠️ choose carefully.
The Summit of the Three Gorges and Baidicheng are far from the new county city of Fengjie. If you want to return on the same day, the time will be very tight, and you will need to make a choice.

Chongqing Travel | The 'Baidi City' in Li Bai's Poetic Paintings
You must visit Fengjie! Witness the cloud-shrouded mountains and seas, admire the magnificent beauty of the Qutang Gorge, the first of the Three Gorges, and seek the ancient Baidi City described by Li Bai in 'Departing at dawn from Baidi amid colorful clouds, I return to Jiangling within a single day.'
History intertwines with modernity; from ancient times to the present, this place has been the crown jewel in the hearts of literati and poets. They have always depicted the Three Gorges with intense emotion and vivid colors, so it is recommended to travel to the peak of the Three Gorges, Baidi City, and the Kuizhou Museum.
At the peak of the Three Gorges, you can overlook the entire Yangtze River and the majestic landscape of Qutang Gorge. It is suggested to visit the viewing platform after reaching the summit.
Kuizhou Museum: A treasure trove of a museum with three exhibition halls, introducing the millennia-old cultural history of Fengjie's Three Gorges from the perspectives of warfare, poetry, and scenery.
Baidi City: The Baidi City written about by Li Bai, the western gateway of the Yangtze River's Three Gorges, the scenic background on the 10 RMB note, where Liu Bei once entrusted his legacy. Its historical significance is extraordinary and it is well worth a visit.
📍 About Transportation: To get to Baidi City and the peak of the Three Gorges, you can take a shuttle bus travel line or drive yourself, both are very convenient.
