A global UNDP practice working to transform food and agricultural commodity sectors.

Sobre nosotros

Food and Agricultural Commodity Systems (FACS) are fundamental to the sustainable development of the 170 countries UNDP supports. FACS are often the largest contributor to their economies; food and nutrition is fundamental for citizen health; and FACS have a key role to play in achieving the SDGs. With the current multiple crises UNDP is supporting governments and other national actors to transition their FACS from recovery to resilience for them to become equitable, inclusive and environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable systems.

  • “Food shows us where real power lies; it can explain conflicts and wars; showcase human creativity and invention; account for the rise and fall of empires; and expose the causes and consequences of disasters. Food stories are perhaps the most essential stories of all.”    These insightful words from Dan Saladino highlight how food is such a powerful force that influences societies, economies, and the health of our planet.    Building on decades of expertise, UNDP has convened a group of experts in climate, nature, resilience, governance, sustainable finance, and crisis programmes to seek integrated solutions. Our new White Paper, “Supporting Food Systems Transformation Towards Sustainability and Resilience,” highlights how food systems shape our world and why transforming them is essential for tackling today’s global challenges.    Together, we’re paving the way for food systems that sustain livelihoods, protect ecosystems, and build resilience—for people and the planet.    📘 Download the White Paper today. • Without fertile soil, there’s no food. Without food, there’s no future.     Yet, 25% of the world’s land is already degraded, with devastating impacts on 3.2 billion people, especially smallholder farmers and vulnerable communities. At the current pace, 95% of land could be degraded by 2050.    In Kirsi, Burkina Faso, the Wendpanga Simplified Cooperative is showing us what’s possible.    With support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme and UNDP, this community-led initiative has restored 260 hectares of degraded land since 2021 using:  🌱 Zaï planting techniques  🪨 Stone barriers  🌙 Half-moons    Their work not only revitalises the land but strengthens livelihoods, builds climate resilience, and restores hope. It’s time to act.    Explore more about this initiative: https://lnkd.in/emaQnK3i    #GenerationRestoration #ForPeopleForPlanet #ForNature

  • 🌳 How can we protect #forest in such a complex world?    Forests contain over half of the global carbon stock in soils and vegetation. Yet, an area roughly the equivalent of 14 million football pitches is lost per year to deforestation.    The latest IPCC Climate Change report highlights that "reducing the conversion of natural ecosystems" is one of the most powerful ways to combat global warming, second only to transitioning to solar energy. Protecting intact ecosystems is now more critical than ever for our planet's future.    In Indonesia, the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) is supporting four projects in the Kalimantan and Sumatra islands through the Sustainable Landscapes Program in Indonesia (SLPI) which aim to protect natural ecosystems, improve agricultural production and boost the livelihoods of islanders.     "The aim of SLPI is to contribute to better stakeholder governance and more sustainable agricultural production in different landscapes. We believe that this will lead to additional income opportunities for the population and more intact natural ecosystems", stated Violette Ruppanner, Head of SECO at the Swiss Embassy in Jakarta.     ➡️ Read how SECO and UNDP continue their partnership to combat deforestation in Indonesia (SLPI)  in our blog “Protecting Forests in a Complex World”: https://ow.ly/aOOF50QTvbF

  • Deep Collaboration: What does it mean for resilient Food Systems?    Building resilient food systems requires more than technical solutions— significant change can only happen gearing up our collaboration skills.    To unlock its full potential, we must cultivate the skills, frameworks, and processes necessary for effective implementation. How can this transformation happen?    Our latest Explainer highlights how systemic challenges like climate change and food insecurity demand multi-stakeholder approaches that bring governments, businesses, communities, and individuals to the table.    Leveraging over 15 years of experience in multi-stakeholder processes, we are well-positioned to align efforts across sectors and scales. This work extends beyond resolving immediate crises, focusing instead on tackling the structural vulnerabilities that undermine food systems, ensuring they are sustainable and inclusive.    Dive into this transformative approach: https://lnkd.in/dQKU6D3N

  • Food and Agricultural Commodity Systems (FACS) are often the most significant contributor to national economies, constituting a fundamental pillar for sustainable development.    However, FACS are in crisis and need to be transformed urgently. In the era of “global boiling” as described by the UN Secretary General António Guterres, we need a dramatic shift of paradigm.    UNDP works to transform FACS in over 100 countries through collaborative action among stakeholders, to build trust and generate breakthrough solutions on systemic issues. We support governments and a wide range of national and local actors to transition their food systems from recovery to resilience, paving the way for them to become equitable, inclusive and environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable systems.    👉 Learn more about UNDP Food & Agricultural Commodity Systems ’s strategy and approach to systemic change: https://lnkd.in/eXhemMKs

  • How can we achieve zero hunger by 2030 and drive progress on the #GlobalGoals?    The 17 Global Goals are a blueprint for a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world. While all the goals are interconnected, Zero Hunger by 2030 is a critical target we must prioritise to ensure that no one is left behind. To nourish today’s 735 million hungry people and the additional 2 billion people expected by 2050, a profound change of the global food and agriculture system is needed.    Urgent coordinated action and policy solutions are imperative.    Achieving this means addressing global challenges like food insecurity, poverty, inequality, and the impact of climate change. It requires coordinated action across governments, organizations, and communities to transform food systems: did you know that tackling food systems covers as many as 9 SDGs?    Together, we can build resilient food systems that support people and the planet. Take a look at this exhibit showcasing the SDGs through captivating photos and bringing to life what the 17 #GlobalGoals mean for people and the planet: https://bit.ly/2YJb4Xq

  • 🌍 Exciting news: UNDP led C3 Initiative wins GEF innovation funding    The Global Environment Facility’s first-ever Innovation Window is supporting bold ideas with $12.3 million in grants—and the multi-partner initiative C3 (Collaboration for Complex Challenges) is one of the winners.    C3 Labs are all about finding innovative, people centric ways to tackle the food-biodiversity-climate nexus. In partnership with FAO, UN Environment Programme, and the Wageningen University & Research (WUR), we’re launching two Collaboration Labs in Kenya and Thailand. These Labs will bring together fellows from different sectors to build systemic solutions and strengthen collaboration across institutions.    This is UNDP’s commitment to pushing boundaries—adapting, collaborating, and tackling the tough challenges standing in the way of sustainability.    💡 Let’s reimagine what’s possible.
