About us

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the leading United Nations organisation fighting to end the injustice of poverty, inequality and climate change. Working with our broad network of experts and partners in 170 countries, we help nations to build integrated, long lasting solutions for people and planet. Development challenges in Papua New Guinea are as diverse and complex as the country itself. To respond to these challenges, UNDP in PNG concentrates its efforts on building the country’s capacity to promote inclusive, pro-poor growth, effective governance, and sustainable and resilient development. We help our partners in identifying relevant solutions to today’s complex, trans-boundary development challenges. • Last week, UNDP and its partner Magna Carta awarded certificates to 20 frontline staff of safe houses serving survivors of gender-based violence, who successfully completed a training on victim impact statements in late 2024. The training equipped 28 frontline staff with the necessary knowledge and expertise to develop comprehensive victim impact statements, a crucial tool in supporting survivors of violence and ensuring their voices are heard in the justice system. The certification ceremony marks a significant milestone in improving the skills of those working in the safe house sector and reinforcing the importance of survivor-centred approaches in Papua New Guinea’s justice system. Magna Carta currently holds a grant with UNDP through the ‘Strengthening the Nationwide CSO System to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence in Papua New Guinea project’, which is funded by the Department for Community Development and Religion (DFCDR). • “Being a person with a #disability in #PapuaNewGuinea is not easy. Many of us are mocked and discriminated against, even by our own families,” says Anna Samingian, a deaf activist for the rights of #PersonsWithDisabilities based in Vanimo, Sandaun Province. After losing her hearing to severe malaria at the age of five, Anna completed her schooling with the steadfast support from her older sister Priscilla. Today, she works as a regional leader for the Women With Disability Network in the Momase Region, where she helps other people with disabilities access services, teaches sign language and changes mindsets through advocacy. With the support of UNDP and CSNU, Anna also recently completed a training on safeguarding persons with disabilities from #GBV and #SARV. 🎥 In honor of World #SocialJusticeDay, WATCH the video below to learn more about Anna’s work and the challenges of being a person with a disability in PNG:

  • The link between mental health and the ongoing violence in the Highlands of #PapuaNewGuinea has often been overlooked in the past. To reduce stigma around mental health among local communities, UNDP completed its first-ever training on mental health and psychosocial support at Komo Station, Hela Province last week. Over 50 young people, local peacebuilders, health professionals, faith-based leaders and council representatives participated in the week-long training, which equipped them with the basic skills for addressing trauma, applying culturally appropriate forms of psychosocial first aid, and facilitating constructive dialogue within conflict-affected communities. “In recent years, Komo District has faced continuous law and order issues. This training is the first of its kind here and we are already seeing young people stepping forward to unite their peers to drive chance and build peace,” stated Edwin Morris, the facilitator of the training. The participants were particularly grateful for the fact that the training was conducted in their mother tongue, Huli, and requested for similar trainings to be held across the province. “Trainings like this have the potential transform people’s lives and as a result, our entire communities. It is important that all of us here share the knowledge we have gained with our families back home, because so many of the issues are caused by conflicts within families,” added Ms Serina Gat, one of the participants at the end of the training. • As #PapuaNewGuinea continues its economic and industrial development, the urgency for businesses to adopt nature-positive and low-carbon solutions has never been greater. 🌏 💚 To support businesses in making a transition to greener practices, UNDP joined hands with the Climate Change and Development Authority - Papua New Guinea (CCDA) and Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) in delivering a ‘Net-Zero Nature Positive Training & Knowledge Transfer Workshop’ in Port Moresby earlier this week. Throughout the training, the 37 participants from the private sector, government agencies, civil society organizations, and financial institutions were able to gain technical knowledge on the integration of decarbonization and biodiversity-risk mitigation systems into their operations. ‘’This workshop is an important step in addressing our shared interests to ensure that PNG’s economic ambitions are realized. The time for action is now. We must embrace a new paradigm¬, one that balances economic prosperity and environmental sustainability,’’ UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Mr. Aadil Mansoor, stated in his remarks to the participants. #NaturePledge #ClimatePromise
