A recent article by AUWCL Professor Jayesh Rathod challenges the traditional view of the U.S. as solely a migrant-receiving nation, focusing instead on U.S. citizens who emigrate due to vulnerability. Labeling them "pressured migrants," Rathod examines how identity-based mistreatment, social safety gaps, and political concerns drive their departures. The article introduces the typology of these migrants, explores pathways they use, and discusses the role of immigration brokers. I was privileged to participate in the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO Diplomatic Conference to conclude a Design Law Treaty as a NGO Observer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with my colleagues Sean Flynn and H. Andrés Izquierdo. I have great respect for the WIPO delegates who worked late into the night for nearly two straight weeks to finally reach agreement. Design law, unlike patent, copyright, and trademark law, is not harmonized so there were many varieties in approach that had to be addressed. I believe the careful consideration of different viewpoints resulted in a better treaty. RIYADH DESIGN LAW TREATY — Adopted! PIJIP Faculty Director Christine Farley, Director Sean Flynn, and Counsel Andres Izquierdo attended the negotiation and adoption of the Riyadh Design Law Treaty from November 11 to 22. PIJIP provided technical assistance to a group of like-minded countries coordinated by the Delegation of Indonesia and including members of the African, Asia Pacific, Latin American, and Caribbean groups of countries. Professors Thomas Margoni and Margo Bagley assisted PIJIP’s team.

Proud to see the culmination of a semester’s worth of work from my Lawyering Peace Program at American University students during their final presentations of client-ready work product. Each semester, the Lawyering Peace Program provides American University Washington College of Law and American University School of International Service students an opportunity to develop professional skills and substantively engage in peace negotiations, post-conflict constitution drafting, and transitional justice planning. It is a privilege to train future peace negotiators and peace builders and an honor to work with such talented young professionals.

Yet, it remains one of the most underreported crimes, silenced by stigma, fear, and insufficient trust in support systems.  As part of the 16 Days of Activism, the 2024-2025 Humphrey Fellows have created a powerful video to raise awareness and inspire change. Professor William J. Snape, III hosted a fireside chat with attorney and climate activist Steven Donziger, who successfully sued Texaco and Chevron on behalf of native Ecuadorians for contaminating water in the Amazon rainforest.
