Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) Space Science Missions Bureau (SSMB) Director Reina Reyes, Ph.D. ceremonially took her oath of office today on 06 January 2025 in Quezon City. The oath was administered by Director General Joel Joseph S. Marciano, Jr., Ph.D. As the SSMB Director, she will lead research and development initiatives across diverse disciplines integral to advancing space science missions, that would drive national and economic growth, and foster scientific progress. Prior to joining PhilSA, Director Reina was an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines Diliman. She received the Outstanding Young Scientist Award for Astrophysics from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in 2023. She is passionate about building a more nurturing, empowering, and inclusive ecosystem for scientists, researchers, and innovators for the benefit of all Filipinos. She obtained her Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Princeton University in 2011. Congratulations on your appointment, Director Reina! #YamangKalawakan

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the POLSA Polska Agencja Kosmiczna | Polish Space Agency have signed an agreement for cooperation on the peaceful uses of outer space at the Sheraton Manila Hotel, Pasay on 05 December 2024. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between PhilSA and POLSA covers the following areas of cooperation: Earth Observation (EO) and remote sensing; space science and exploration of outer space; promotion of space industry; promotion of space education through various academic activities for areas focusing on space science technology applications (SSTA); and other areas of cooperation that may be mutually decided upon by both Agencies. 🌌🚀 What an incredible three days in Manila! UNOOSA, with the support of the Philippine Space Agency and the Government of Japan, successfully concluded the #SpaceLaw Technical Advisory Mission (TAM) to the Philippines from November 4-6. This mission delved into critical areas of space law and featured a hands-on, scenario-based exercise that looked into the application of: 📜 Fundamental principles of space law and the global governance of outer space activities 📋 National space legislation: purpose, scope, and key elements for effective governance 🤝 Authorization, licensing, and supervision of national space activities 💼 State responsibility and liability: current trends, benefits, and necessary steps for national frameworks 🛰️ Satellite data security and Earth observation: legal and regulatory considerations 🔐 Insurance requirements for space activities and safety considerations in licensing 🌑 Space resources: legal perspectives 🔄 Transfer of ownership: national approaches and implications for space objects A big thank you to experts from 🇦🇺, 🇧🇪, 🇫🇷, 🇩🇪, 🇯🇵, 🇦🇪 & 🇬🇧, who were able to share good practices in their respective national space policies and laws, and helped lay the groundwork for sustainable space governance in the Philippines and beyond. 🔜 Stay tuned for updates from UN Conference on Space Law and Policy, from 19-21 November, where we will be assisting more countries to implement international space law, as developed by the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (#COPUOS).
