About us

IDEAS was established in June 2012 with a vision to strengthen the economic and social foundation of democracy in Pakistan by producing rigorous quality research. The rationale behind IDEAS is to create and strengthen local capacity to undertake rigorous research and advocacy on economic and social issues critical to Pakistan’s economic sustainability and democratic future, which essentially depend on reducing socio-economic inequalities and countering political and social polarization through representative and responsive institutions. The objective is to identify, through research, pivotal opportunities of policy reform, both in terms of feasibility and impact, and subsequently, use that knowledge for advocacy and policy engagement. IDEAS envisions research to be innovative, multidisciplinary and rigorous and believes in policy engagement that is strategic, consistent and long-term.

  • Dr. Sarah Khan will be discussing her research, ‘Pre-Analysis Plan Women’s Action Committees and Local Services in Pakistan’ (Dr. Ali Cheema, Dr. Sarah Khan, Dr. Shandana Khan Mohmand, Dr. Soledad Artiz Prillaman), on Day 3 of Pathways to Development 2024. 🔎 Paper Session 10: Gender, Development and Social Change 🕜 12:00pm - 2:00pm 📍 Lahore University of Management Sciences The paper delves into IDEAS research collected during the EGAP Metaketa V: Women’s Action Committees and Local Services. The project studies ways to develop women’s collective efficacy for local political participation in Pakistan. The study is being conducted as part of a set of five coordinated field experiments across Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Vietnam through the EGAP Metaketa V initiative. The common treatment implemented across all countries involves a set of facilitated trainings delivered to women’s groups aimed to increase their gender-based collective efficacy. The Pakistan arm of the project aims to study the effect of training delivered to women aimed at removing psycho-social barriers to political participation. The project will study whether such training improves women’s political participation outcomes. 🔎 Visit the ‘EGAP Metaketa V: Women’s Action Committees and Local Services’ project page on the IDEAS website to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eJfkdBCr

  • The ‘Sustaining Power: Women’s Struggles Against Backlash in Contemporary South Asia’ exhibition, displays almost 5 years worth of research into when, how, and why women’s power struggles succeed in retaining power and sustaining their gains against backlash. The research has seeked to understand the strategies and processes of women’s movements in South Asia in the face of backlash from regressive social, political and economic forces. Visit the SuPWR project page on the IDEAS website to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eUYVzurt Launched in January 2020, SuPWR is a five-year multi-country study funded by the Economic Social Research Council (ESRC), United Kingdom. The project identifies specific women’s movements in the domain of family, community, market, and the state in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal respectively, and study these through longitudinal work and a gendered political economy analysis to be able to capture normative and institutional change processes that the women’s movements undergo.
